Built in redwood, surrounding an existing adobe, by Alfred Workman during 1869-1872. He also imported the first Blue Gum Eucalyptus trees (Eucalyptus globulus) to California. Their shadow patterns on the residence inspired a later owner to name it Shadow Ranch, and towering Blue Gums are now one of the state's iconic symbols.
