- This Iowa grandmother gave up Johnny’s monologue for Lent. When her grandson found out, he wrote in to the show describing her intention. But he did it without her knowledge. After she found out about her grandson’s letter, and the show started calling, it took some doing before she agreed to come on the show.
I wanted to share this interview on this special date: The 30th Anniversary of the final Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. I believe Johnny was touched by her visit as the interview went along; knowing her age was close to his parents’ age, and they both shared the same midwestern roots. In addition, both of his parents had passed away a few years before.
All in all, everything culminated into what must have been a very meaningful evening for him. Airdate: 4/5/89. COMPLETE SEGMENT
Johnny Carson: King of Late Night TV. King of interviewers. This video further proves it!
Carson obviously loved having heartland folks on, and he always treated them with the greatest respect and courtesy.
Very true.
Johnny was proud of being born in Iowa and raised in Nebraska.
You can take the boy outta Iowa but you can't take Iowa outta the boy ..

Unless he moves to Nebraska
I loved it when he'd have these segments with just everyday people instead of celebrities and politicians.
What a sweetheart
Reminds me a little of the Legendary Lee Canady
She is a tender and honest wise woman
I will pray for America. Please pray for me. God Bless you.
Johnny was the greatest of all time
No one is better
What a great exchange
Johnny handled her with nuance and class and charm
God Bless Grandma's sister!!!
My favorite Johnny Interviews are ones like these!
A true American - they don’t make them like this anymore !
She is a great example of a lady and one that is humble! So refreshing to see a lady with a strong sense of right and wrong, and respect for herself and others.
It breaks my heart to know these people are all gone. But the older lady and Johnny Carson lived a full life.
She’s precious 🩷😍
How far we've fallen. From Carson to Kimmel 😢
Wouldn’t see this now, by any of them
Beautiful lady - Josephine ❤❤❤
So cute!
So sweet! ❤
As a kid, more years ago than I want to admit, I stayed up with my grandmother to watch the tonight show. I remember one comment thst a guest made about being irregular and someone giving him a pill. And he said " it was amazing what happened ". My grandma laughed so hard but since I didn't know what irregular was I didn't find it funny!
❤❤❤
No one but Johnny could do do that
My Mother's Aunt
Awww, you were blessed with a lovely relative. She was just as sweet as she could be judging by this clip.
From the thumbnail I thought it was Mrs. Doubtfire.
Clearly out of her comfort zone.
Does anyone know what age this woman was
