The story is written by Ishii Katsuhito, Enokido Yoji, and Sakurai Yoshiki. Ishii_Katsuhito and Koike Takeshi designed the characters. Koike was also the animation director. The soundtrack was composed by James Shimoji. It was released in Japan on October 9, 2010 after being in production for seven years though it premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival on August 14, 2009. 100,000 hand-made drawings were used in the film, which was made on a budget of 30 billion yen (30 million US dollars). A short pilot version/prototype of the film was released during its long seven year production. The movie is notable for its distinctive, stylized, and very detailed animation. Notably, the majority of the cast are alien looking and regular humans are actually in the minority of the movie's universe. The movie is also notable for its very over the top action. The racing itself is comparable to a more serious version of Mario Kart with massive explosions, weapons being thrown around, and the race courses littered with deadly obstacles. The film was also the last project veteran seiyuu Gouri Daisuke, who played Gori-Rider, worked on before his tragic suicide. It tells the story of talented racer JP whose in deep trouble with the mafia. Despite his skill at racing, JP has to throw races in order to pay off debts to the mafia. This has actually gotten him imprisoned before, but he continues to throw races even after his release. Although he has yet to win, he is very popular amongst the general public and his popularity allows him to join the big and highly dangerous Redline race, which will be set on Roboworld. Roboworld is a militarized planet and its leaders do not want the Redline race there, but the planners behind the race have a plan to make the race happen anyway. JP joins the race and strikes up a relationship with fellow racer Sonoshee Mclaren as they prepare for the big race. But their relationship hits a roadblock when she discovers JP's shady background. Furthermore, JP is still indebted to the mafia who also want him to throw the Redline race as well. It is also a partial inspiration for the Western animated series Motorcity.
