Algiers (Arabic: 196 متر, romanized196 mitr, lit.'196 metres') is a 2024 mystery thriller film written, scored, co-edited and directed by Chakib Taleb-Bendiab in his directorial debut.[1] An international co-production between Algeria, Tunisia, France and Canada,[2] the film stars Meriem Medjkane, Nabil Asli and Hichem Mesbah.[3] It won the Grand Prix Award at the 28th Rhode Island International Film Festival.[4]

It was selected as the Algerian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards, but was not nominated.[5]

Synopsis

Dounia is a professional psychiatrist who, together with police inspector Sami, navigates the disturbing shadows of Algeria's past to unravel the mystery of a girl's disappearance.[6]

Principal photography took place in early June 2022 in Algiers, Algeria.[7][8]

Release

It had its world premiere on August 9, 2024, at the 28th Rhode Island International Film Festival.[9] The distribution rights were sold to K-Films Amérique for release in Canadian theaters,[10] while Mad Solutions acquired international rights.[11]
