He serves as the Clinical Director of Croydon University Hospital and is a consultant at King's College Hospital in London. Qasim is also the founder and CEO of MedShr, a global FOAMed platform designed for secure clinical case discussion among healthcare professionals.[1]

Early life and education

[edit]

Qasim completed his medical education at the University of Cambridge, earning a degree in medicine with honours. He pursued a PhD in cardiovascular stem cell biology at Cambridge, focusing on mechanisms of repair in cardiac tissue. He later undertook an interventional cardiology fellowship in Milan, where he trained under Dr Antonio Colombo, specialising in advanced coronary interventions.[2]

Medical career

[edit]

Qasim works as an interventional cardiologist with NHS appointments at Croydon University Hospital and King's College Hospital. At Croydon University Hospital, he has held the position of Clinical Director. His clinical and research activities focus on coronary interventions and improving patient outcomes in cardiovascular care. He has contributed to cardiology research as a senior investigator in several clinical trials and has authored publications in peer-reviewed journals.[1]

MedShr and FOAMed

[edit]

Qasim founded MedShr, a platform designed for clinical case discussions and medical education. The platform serves over 2.5 million healthcare professionals globally, providing resources for Peer-to-Peer learning and case-based education across a range of specialties.[1]

MedShr has contributed to global healthcare by developing education programmes tailored to healthcare workers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These programmes address major healthcare challenges such as cardiovascular diseases, HIV, malaria, and sickle cell disease. MedShr also hosts learning communities focused on rare diseases and oncology, aiming to improve knowledge sharing and best practices among healthcare professionals.[3]

The platform features over 1,000 free learning modules covering various disciplines, including infectious diseases, chronic conditions, emergency medicine, and paediatrics. MedShr’s work has been recognised with the King's Awards for Enterprise in Innovation and honours at the PM Society Digital Awards.[4]

Contributions to medical education

[edit]

Qasim has advocated for enhanced patient safety and the regulation of healthcare roles in the National Health Service (NHS), particularly focusing on clearly defining the scope of practice for emerging roles such as physician associates.[3] Additionally, he has participated in discussions on improving communication between the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare professionals to bridge gaps in understanding and collaboration.[4]

Publications

[edit]

In 2023, Qasim authored Next of Kin: Cardiology, Loss and Learning, a book that reflects on his experiences as a cardiologist and the professional challenges he faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.[5]

Affiliations
