Ikwerre is a Local Government Area in Rivers State, Nigeria. Its headquarters is located in the town of Isiokpo, often referred to as the "ancient kingdom of Ikwerre land." Ikwerre LGA is historically significant as it was the first Iwuhuohna local government area, which later gave rise to Emohua, Obio/Akpor, and Port Harcourt LGAs. The Ikwerre tribe primarily occupies the upland region of Rivers State and is known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant socio-economic contributions to the state.

Ikwerre LGA shares boundaries with Imo State to the north, Emohua LGA to the west, Etche LGA to the east, and Obio-Akpor LGA to the south. The area is predominantly occupied by the Ikwerre people, who are one of the major ethnic groups in Rivers State.

Current Administration

The current Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area is Bar. Israel Abosi (6th,October,2023 - Present), a native of Elele.

Bar. Abosi oversees the administration and development of the LGA, working closely with councilors and other officials to implement policies aimed at improving the quality of life for residents.

Ikwerre LGA has an average annual temperature of 26 degrees Celsius and a total size of 1,380 square kilometers. The Lower Gulch Area experiences two distinct seasons—the dry and the rainy—with an average humidity level of 90%. In Ikwerre LGA, the wet seasons are distinguished by prolonged precipitation and typically persist longer than the dry ones.[1][2]
