Mwemba Burton (born January 4, 1985), known professionally as Mwijaku, is a Tanzanian Influencer, broadcaster, actor and social commentator.[1]

Early life

Mwijaku was born and raised in Tanzania. There is limited information about his early life, education, or family. However, he began his career in the entertainment industry in his 20s.

Mwijaku speaks his mind in entertainment discussions[5].He frequently shares his opinions on social media[6] and in interviews.[7] His controversial statements often draw public attention.[8] Mwijaku has addressed various societal issues, including calling for the regulation of awards distributed by institutions he claimed violated constitutional principles and fairness. In 2024, he wrote to Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, highlighting concerns over conflicts of interest in some award processes. Following his nomination for Best Motivator at the Consumer Choice Awards which he did not win Mwijaku proposed gathering public support to push for parliamentary discussion on fairer award practices[9].

Mwijaku is a social media influencer in Tanzania known for his commentary on the entertainment industry. He introduced the concept of "Uchawa," which involves analyzing and critiquing the lives of celebrities and events in the entertainment world. Through his use of platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube, he has contributed to discussions about the Bongo Flava music scene and the challenges facing the industry, including the influence of digital music distribution. His presence has sparked debates on various issues affecting Tanzanian entertainment.[10]

Controversies

In 2019, Mwijaku was charged with distributing explicit images online via WhatsApp. He denied the charges at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court in Dar es Salaam. Although granted bail, he was remanded after failing to meet the conditions.[11] In 2024, Mwijaku was sued by renowned Tanzanian cartoonist Masoud Kipanya, who demanded TZS 5.5 billion in damages for alleged defamation on social media.[12][13]

Personal life

Mwijaku is known as a husband[14] and a father to one child. Despite his fame, he keeps most of his personal life private.[15]Mwijaku once accused actress Irene Uwoya of attempting to ruin his marriage.[16]
