Feminism project

[edit]

Please do not include this within the "feminism" project. This is an issue that affects males, females, and the transgendered. I recognize that females are primary victims of violence but including it in this project improperly excludes other groups. 24.126.193.118 (talk) 18:40, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Including this in a feminism project is discrimination against non-females. Devil Master (talk) 13:04, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Teen dating violence

[edit]

I initially posted this on the talk page of the admin that had merged this article (incorrectly I believe) but have made no headway. Instead I'll post this here so that other editors (and hopefully some admins) can participate in any healthy discourse. While "dating abuse" is a term used by some groups, its use is in the minority. Below is some data supporting my claim.

United States (the U.S. leads the world in efforts to identify and prevent this problem and so the majority of the literature and research is necessarily skewed toward U.S.-based organizations)

Canada

U.K. (the U.K. launched their first national campaign this year on February 15, 2010 and are using "this is abuse" as their tagline (http://thisisabuse.direct.gov.uk/) but this should not be construed as adoption of the phrase for classification purposes)

I will ask you again. Do you believe that abuse only occurs among teens in relationships? Do you believe no violence or abuse occurs among couples over the age of 18? If you have evidence of that, then please submit it. It does seem though that the notion that all dating abuse is teen dating abuse is patently absurd. Furthermore, putting aside the bias of having this article focus exclusively on teens and neglect all other forms of dating violence, the quality was especially low and read like a how-to pamphlet copy & pasted from some organization's website NOT a quality, neutral, encyclopedic article as it should be. First, I agree that the article has become a bit of a disaster. Based on the content that was added my guess is that it was from well-meaning students wanting to contribute to the article. Second, I appreciate you clarifying your issue with the article. Now that I realize that the issue is with the teen aspect I'll be happy to expand. Initially I believed that the issue was with the word violence as opposed to the word abuse.

Teen dating violence is a subset of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), commonly known as domestic violence. In the same way that an article on lung cancer isn't intended to imply that there are no other forms of cancer, the intention is not to say that IPV doesn't exist for non-teenagers, instead that teen dating violence is a professionally recognized subset of IPV with its own unique distinctions from "adult" IPV. At one point the article highlighted these distinctions (e.g. teenagers are less likely to identify the difference between a "healthy" and "unhealthy" relationship due to their age and lack of dating experience; teenagers are more likely to turn to peers for advice; etc.).
The Federal and State governments in the U.S. began acknowledging these distinctions a few years ago when they started passing legislation specifically aimed at "teen" dating violence (Texas was the first in 2007 with HB 121 which requires every school district to teach their students about "teen" dating violence).
Ideally an article about IPV would address all "intimate partner violence" and would serve as the cornerstone for articles on "dating violence or abuse" and "teen dating violence." Again, the reason for the distinction is important: "teen dating violence" has unique aspects that has resulted in the professional community distinguishing it from abuse occurring in older age groups. This distinction is reflected in actions taken by the Federal and several state governments in the U.S. as well as more recent efforts in the U.K. 24.126.193.118 (talk) 16:15, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that an article or section on lung cancer shouldn't imply that other forms of cancer don't exist. But if someone goes to the cancer page and erases everything pertaining to non-lung kinds of cancer, then that is a problem. It was decided, by multiple users, that teen dating violence would be better covered as part of the existing page on overall dating abuse. As I said, there is no reason not to include a section on teens specifically (or black people, or alcoholics, or any other subset group) within the dating abuse article. The problem is that instead of recognizing that other forms of relationship abuse occur, many editors over the last few months monopolized the dating abuse article to make it exclusively about teens. This was inappropriate. The quality of the content itself was similarly inappropriate. KPalicz (talk) 17:52, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Template nomination

[edit]

I would like to supplement the Template:Violence against women the Template:Violence against men as both genders can be victims of dating abuse. Any opposition to this inclusion? Ranze (talk) 21:24, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
