The Texas Longhorns football team competes as part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision , representing the University of Texas at Austin in the Big 12 Conference . Since the establishment of the team in 1893, Texas has appeared in 50 bowl games .[ 1] Included in these games are 29 combined appearances in the traditional "big four" bowl games (the Rose , Sugar , Cotton , and Orange ) and 7 Bowl Championship Series (BCS) game appearances, including one in the BCS National Championship Game .[ 1]
