Doesn't work. It causes a redlink to appear on the page. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots09:21, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

It's no longer a redlink, but it's still not displaying the icon. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots19:45, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
Apparently because someone redirected the logo to File:AutoreviewLogo.png but failed to change the template, which of course is protected. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots19:47, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Hello, are you steward? Help me! Because I was blocked there (accusation) canvassing at Indonesian Wikipedia. And lately I've never done anything like that. Just look list contribution at there. Please (if possible) revoked the block status.

Oh ya, I also ask to release the SockPuppet I was there named id:User: Erik Evermtus at Indonesian Wikipedia because this account will be used as a substitute if the main account stolen by others such as id:User:Kenrick95Sock. Thank you --Erik Evrest (talk) 04:43, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I just expanded this page, and I was wondering if there's a picture out there of two chavrusas learning over their Gemaras? I've seen pictures like that in the Israeli papers; maybe there's something on Flicker that can be uploaded? However, I don't know how to do that, so I appreciate your help or advice. Jury duty

So how was jury duty? Did you actually accomplish anything, or did you mostly just sit around? --jpgordon::==( o ) 16:17, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

I was an alternate, so I did not deliberate, but was only released after all of the testimony and the charge (3.5 weeks). Technically, I was only released the next day, after the jury came back with a verdict, just in case something happened and I was needed for deliberations. It was a fascinating experience; I'm glad I went through it, and I'm also glad it is over. -- Avi (talk) 19:18, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Josephus

Hi Avi 1. Josephus does refer to twenty different men called Jesus throughout his works. However all of those Greek Jesuses, such as Jesus ben Ananias are Yeshua in Hebrew. The spelling Yeshu is never used in any other context than Jesus of Nazareth according to Voorst 2000. 2. Ephraim Urbach 1956 does not say that Yeshu does not refer to Yeshu, he says Balaam does not refer to Yeshu. 3. Nosson Dovid Rabinowich however "may" say that he considers that Yeshu does not refer to Yeshu, in which case you have provided the modern source that the medievel view is still held by some. As you are the only person who has shown any interest in providing a source can I please ask that you provide text and page number - as far as I can see the Gil Student webpage doesn't actually have Rabinowitz himself saying that in his own words, but it may do. Hi Avi. Why is this a breach of DICDEF? There's already a ton more material than a dictionary would have. Really surprised by your nom, so wondered what I'm missing. --Dweller (talk) 10:21, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

Did you see the way the page looked when I nominated it? Even so, the "expansion" seems to be calculated just to show usage, and does not add anything to the understanding of the phrase, which should be on wiktionary, and not wikipedia. -- Avi (talk) 14:52, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
Avi
Is it possible to see anywhere the history of AfD for other articles in Category:Hebrew words and phrases before? In ictu oculi (talk) 16:46, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

I hadn't, no. But the expansion, to me, does further understanding of the phrase, its use/origins, and all of it would not appear in a dictionary. So, it's verifiably notable, it's beyond dicdef - what more do we need? I just can't understand a rationale for deletion. --Dweller (talk) 08:54, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

I just received this weird notice on my talk page. Is this common practice by unidentified IP users? The block isn't even active. I didn't think I was canvassing at all; other Jewish editors have often alerted me to deletion discussions. Best, Yoninah (talk) 20:21, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
Whilst canvassing isn't allowed, a few friendly notices are OK. You are better off dropping notes at project talk pages. Regardless, that user is no admin and there is no block. -- Avi (talk) 21:04, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Naeim Giladi.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Naeim Giladi.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. I wish you well and enjoy seeing your contributions on Wikipedia in other articles. In ictu oculi (talk) 11:41, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your thanks back on my Talk page. I said I'd gone but your ending q. on the article Talk page is a sensible and sensitive comment. Generally in grammars/linguistics one would use "personal name" for clarity, but generally in colloquial writing "name" stands for "given name"; "John is a given/personal name", "Canterbury is a place name". Personal name is used where there's ambiguity "Gladstone can be a personal name or a place name"

  • William (name) has "William is a popular given name of old Germanic origin. It became very popular in the English language after the Norman conquest of England in 1066, ..."
  • Isa (name) has the lede 1st sentences "Isa is an Arabic name corresponding to Jesus in English. It is a common male given name for Arabs and Muslims. Arabic-speaking Muslims refer to Jesus as Isa."
  • Yeshua (name) has the lede 1st sentences "Yeshua, (ישוע, with vowel pointing יֵשׁוּעַ yēšūă‘ in Hebrew)[1] was a common alternative form of the name Joshua Yehoshuah יְהוֹשֻׁעַ in later books of the Hebrew Bible and among Jews of the Second Temple Period. The name corresponds to the Greek spelling Iesous, from which comes the English spelling Jesus.[2][3]"

Hi, this edit appears to be a violation of WP:PRIVACY; I suggest that you revert it and have it removed. (Note that 'The fact that a person either has posted personal information or edits under their own name, making them easily identifiable through online searches, is not an excuse for "opposition research"' applies to the other editor as well.) Regards, AV3000 (talk) 17:18, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

You do realize it is not a real name, but an internet handle? -- Avi (talk) 17:21, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
I'll ask on func-en for confirmation. -- Avi (talk) 17:25, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
Of course. You have clearly violated the policy by engaging in off-WP opposition research (as did the other editor), but then you also posted specific links that identify him. That's WP:OUTING, as far I'm concerned, but that's why I hedged with "appears to be". Thanks for inquiring further, but if it were me I'd act proactively. Regards, AV3000 (talk) 17:32, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
I have an e-mail into func-en as we speak. Privacy does say that "…once individuals have identified themselves, such information can be used for discussions of conflict of interest in appropriate forums." In this case, the question is linking an anonymous wiki handle with the same anonymous handle off-wiki considered a release of personally identifiable information. I really don't think so, but if I hear back from func-en/arbcom that it is, I'll suppress it posthaste. -- Avi (talk) 17:35, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
More specifically, you linked a handle to an external Youtube account with the same handle that identifies the user with personal details that the editor has not chosen to reveal on WP - I hope you made this clear in your query. AV3000 (talk) 17:52, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
I linked the diff so that the other functionaries could see the edit and the links directly. -- Avi (talk) 17:55, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

MaryChristiano

Hi there Avraham, hope you're keeping well.
I noticed that you recently blocked MaryChristiano as a sockpuppet of Professional Insurance Agents. However, Professional Insurance Agents was only soft-blocked due to username concerns, and they were therefore welcome to create themselves a new account. In light of this (and Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Professional Insurance Agents/Archive) it would probably be appropriate to unblock MaryChristiano, as they have not actually violated the sockpuppetry policy.
Many thanks, SpitfireTally-ho! 19:53, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

They were warned about spam and CoI as PIA, and continued the same behavior as Mary. However, if they ask for an unblock on the Mary page and commit to editing within the guidelines allowed by WP:COI, then I'd have no issue with an unblock. -- Avi (talk) 22:18, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Avraham: need your help and guidance

an actuarial voice out of the past; i am writing an article about John Francis Mitchell who is a cousin. He invented (co-invented with martin cooper who worked for mitchell) the cell phone and was a giant in the communications industry. his story is in my sandbox and i have lots of work to do to complete all the references and links.

here is my problem. his son, kevin, who is also my cousin, is in a state of denial about his father's accomplishments. for example, he insists that his father was the sole inventor of the cell phone.

also, john mitchell was the mover and shakeer behind the "iridium constellation" project which had to be refinanced and which is now profitable.

kevin does not want me to mention Iridium. when the WSJ wrote a memorial about john mitchell,Motorola Executive Helped spur Cellphone Revolution, Wall Street Journal, June 20–21, 2009, p. A10 they mentioned Iridium; this upset Kevin who wrote a letter to the editor complaining about the fact that they mentioned Iridium.

so now as i shared a draft of what i am doing with Kevin, he is coming totally uncooperative and threatens to block what i am doing.

so i ask myself; should i stop writing the article or not. how do i deal with a relative who will drive me or the editors of wiki crazy? joe (talk) 21:28, 3 November 2011 (UTC) joebrophy

Hello, Joe. My suggestions would be the following:
  1. Rigorously follow the English Wikipedia project's guidelines for sourcing. If the information in question is WP:V|verifiable]] in reliable sources then it should not be removed. As such, continued improper removal by others would be subject to protective measures.
  2. Ask for help, be it in editing or as extra pairs of eyes, on the talk pages of appropriate WikiProjects. For this article, I would suggest Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Science and academia and Wikipedia:WikiProject Technology.
  3. Be prepared for some frustration. Wiki-processes can be slow, and patience is always helpful. Also, as we are a public project, the more people who get involved, the more the article may morph beyond what your initial perception was—which is not necessarily a bad thing.
  4. Lastly, if you feel that Wiki policies are being violated, you can request adminisrator assistance at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents.
Good Luck! -- Avi (talk) 15:32, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Probable socks

I found you on WP:CU. So there's been debates over what to include in History of Montana with Rjensen and then Parkwells shows up out of nowhere. Wiki stalker shows [2] 516 pages in common (few are talk pages) and on a wide range of topics. I could see maybe 100-150 if it's a narrow range of topics, but this is a wide array of topics and over 500 pages in common. Can you investigate this and what can be done? Thank you.PumpkinSky talk 11:06, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

Wikistalker alone isn't usually considered enough evidence. If you feel you have actual on-wiki evidence, please open a request at WP:SPI with that evidence. Thanks! -- Avi (talk) 14:26, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
Prior SPI Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Rjensen which at least one person said was confirmed. ALso note Rjensen's blocklog stops around that time and that Parkwells appears around that time. Thoughts? I'll work on more evidence. But you have to admit that 516 pages in common is A LOT. PumpkinSky talk 20:32, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
Not really. Overlap has to do with a combination of time and shared areas of interest. For example. There is at least one editor whom wikistalk claims I overlap on over 1200 articles, but as we are both identified to the foundation, there is no way we can be sockpuppets. For people editing here for 5 or more years, you have to expect overlap. I'm not saying that they are definitively not socks, but that wikistalk, while a tool, is just that, and sometimes not that helpful. Sorry. -- Avi (talk) 01:35, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
They're socks or meats, no doubt in my mind. PumpkinSky talk 01:42, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Then by all means, file a report at WP:SPI, provide diffs, and ask for a checkuser. The better evidence you have, the more likely the CU will be run. Anyway, behavioral evidence is preferred when trying to prove connections. If you're right, and you can show it, it will get handled. Thanks! -- Avi (talk) 02:12, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Sudais

Fine the article should have well cited references however I think it is unfairly tainting the entire article, you can't have a neutral article that documents someone purely by stating their (heavily disputed) errors. I'm going to keep the cited references but I will also update the article with some positive and referenced aspects so as to have a more balanced article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sakimonk (talkcontribs) 08:30, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

If you can find citations that are:
  1. Verifiable in reliable sources
  2. Encyclopedic
  3. Help flesh out the article
that would be fantastic. The idea is not to villify Sudais. However, it is undeniable that his comments about non-Muslims (Jews, Hindus, Christians, etc.) and the world-wide response is pretty much at the core of why this man is more notable than most Imams. If you find something that is not properly cited, let's discuss it on the talk page. But the panorama interview by the BBC and their subsequent explanation is about as reliably sourced as anything on this project, I'm afraid. Thank you. -- Avi (talk) 16:50, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks very much :) the article is excellently edited now, it seems a lot more balanced
also I honestly believe his comments are unfairly taken out of context and if I recall correctly he was quite emotional about the situation of the Palestinians who had recently been undergoing a form of extreme desperation for medical supplies and food, but that's my personal opinion but the article is quite good now, thanks again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sakimonk (talkcontribs) 18:21, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for the kind words. I understand; we all have our opinions as to subjects of the articles on Wikipedia; what we try to do is strictly adhere to our guidelines to ensure that every articke gets treated the same way. Thank you for finding those sources which help flesh out why Sudais is notable and balance the article in accordance with WP:NPOV. A pleasure working with you! -- Avi (talk) 20:21, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Your bureaucratship.

Your bureaucratship was closed on 20:26, 08 April 2009 by Rlevse. It appears that Rlevse had his wife, JoJo vote, creating a conflict of interest. I do not suspect you were part of said conflict. Would you accept having another, untainted, bureaucrat review his close? Thank you. Hipocrite (talk) 13:12, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

I do not believe it necessary, in that the close was completely uncontroversial; I had a support ratio of 22.5:1 which far exceeded even the most draconian 9:1 requirement of the "dark days" of RfB. Even if JoJo's support is discounted, I cannot imagine another 'crat closing Wikipedia:Requests for bureaucratship/Avraham 3 as anything but a pass. In my opinion, such a review would only serve to increase unnecessary wikidrama. Now Wikipedia:Requests for bureaucratship/Avraham 2 would be another story, but that one was deemed unsuccessful after a crat chat so the point is moot, in my opinion. Out of curiosity, Hipocrite, has there been anyone clamoring for my removal due to the close? -- Avi (talk) 15:58, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your answer - that is fine by me, but I thought you should be made aware. No. I would support your remaining a bureaucrat and have had no discussions with anyone other than you, here, regarding this matter, as I don't participate in non-public discussions of Wikipedia content/conduct. Hipocrite (talk) 16:06, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
The close was practically SNOW, so I can't imagine it would end differently, but procedurally, I would think any such request would belong on WP:BN; I don't think a 'crat should be opining on the correctness of one's own nomination.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 18:31, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
I believe I was being asked for my own opinion as an editor, not as a crat. See Hipocrite's question to Franamax, who most certainly is not being asked as a 'crat . When there is doubt about the hat I am wearing on the response, I usually tag it (like I did at Wikipedia talk:Arbitration Committee#Under controversial circumstances). -- Avi (talk) 18:33, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
Upon reflection, it appears my response may have sounded like a rebuke for you answering; that wasn't my intention. My poorly worded point was that, if the question even needs to be asked, it ought to be asked of other 'crats, and therefore not here. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 20:00, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
No worries, it wasn't taken that way. You had a legitimate concern about the question and whether or not I was being asked as an official or as an editor. The former would have been inappropriate; thankfully it was the latter. -- Avi (talk) 23:49, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Informal CU request

There's some pretty nasty trolling going on on Talk:Fisting targetting User:Ctjf83. Can you take a look at the recently blocked accounts User:Vallejobadlands, User:Droidhelper, User:Ziplinezulu, User:Droidfetuses and User:Decentsentinel? I don't know if they are connected to User:68.103.24.102, but blocking that IP would probably be a useful preventative measure. Thanks. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 03:13, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

If you believe the IP should be blocked due to harassment, by all means do so. Otherwise, please file a wp:SPI request with diffs; unfortunately, we shouldn't just CU willy-nilly (fishing and all). That doesn't stop you from warning/blocking accounts for violating WP rules. -- Avi (talk) 04:05, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
I wasn't suggesting that you go "fishing" -- there is already clear connection between the accounts -- I was suggesting that further incidences might be prevented by identifying the underlying source. I'll take it to SPI, but this seems like a fairly innocuous request to me. Perhaps I should have emailed instead. Thanks anyway. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 20:00, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
No problem, and I'm sorry if I came across too brusque. It's just that there has been discussion that we need to make sure that checks are run appropriately. As annoying as it is, unless it's an emergency or there are privacy-type issues, it's better for all involved to actually file the SPI. Firstly, it helps keep a record on wiki as to who was checked, why they were checked, and the results. Secondly, if the diffs are brought it is much more capable of being justified in the event that someone claims "misuse of tool". Thank you. -- Avi (talk) 22:01, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
I understand completely. Thanks. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 22:46, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Josef Mengele (and other articles)

Hi Avi,

I've run into an issue with User:Mystichumwipe at Josef Mengele and a couple of other articles. I think my assessments of the issues and situation are reasonable, but he has accused me of bias and is asking for outside eyes to look at it. You're pretty calm and level-headed, and have a reputation for neutrality and even-handedness; would you mind taking a look? Jayjg (talk) 21:34, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Avraham,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 15:41, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

2012 AUSC candidacy

Further to our previous correspondence, your Audit Subcommittee candidacy page has been created. Please visit the page to review (and if necessary, edit) your nomination statement, as well as answer the standard questions. You should also keep watch for any further questions the community may pose. Feel free to contact myself or another arbitrator if you have any questions. Once again, thank you for your offer to serve on the subcommittee. –xenotalk 03:56, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Yamaaan / Charming Sabeel block

Hi, just saw you blocked Yamaaan (talk · contribs) and Charming Sabeel (talk · contribs) as socks of each other. I now find that per File:Sabeel Hussain.jpg and per common editing profile, the Sabeel account is also linked to earlier Sabeeel43 (talk · contribs), which was indef-blocked in November. Should we then indef Yamaaan too? Cheers, – Fut.Perf. 14:41, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

I thought this was Yamaan's first violation. As they've both been indeffed on the Commons, and have socked here before, you may be right. -- Avi (talk) 15:16, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Friendly notification regarding this week's Signpost

Hello. This is an automated message to tell you that, as it stands, you will shortly be mentioned in this week's 'Arbitration Report' (link). The report aims to inform The Signpost's many readers about the activities of the Arbitration Committee in a non-partisan manner. Please review the article, and, if you have any concerns, feel free to leave them in the Comments section directly below the main body of text, where they will be read by a member of the editorial team. Please only edit the article yourself in the case of grievous factual errors (making sure to note such changes in the comments section), as well as refraining from edit-warring or other uncivil behaviour on project pages generally. Thank you. On behalf of The Signpost's editorial team, LivingBot (talk) 00:00, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Thank you. -- Avi (talk) 00:12, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Just a heads-up

I think you accidentally responded to an old revision here [3], removing a few intervening edits. Fut.Perf. 17:42, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks! -- Avi (talk) 17:46, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Of interest

Since you were the one to block User:Vanished user 03 (fka ChrisO), and subsequently blocked User:Prioryman based on checkuser evidence, I thought you might find this of interest. JungerMan Chips Ahoy! (talk) 06:13, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

I had been told a while ago to let ArbCom handle ChrisO and any future incarnations, so I suggest contacting them directly. Sorry. -- Avi (talk) 06:52, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
Ok. Weird, but ok. Any suggestion on the best way to contact ArbCom with this? JungerMan Chips Ahoy! (talk) 07:16, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
I guess via their e-mail address or the functionaries e-mail address. -- Avi (talk) 07:22, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
