Thank you for volunteering
There's still lots of prep work left.
One of the things we're doing to prepare for the event is some rudimentary work on the page set itself - to give participants a better idea of what they will be helping to create, and to get co-coordinators more familiar with the project. We're in the process of finishing the intro section for each page, the region section, and the government branches sections. The lead section is the most visible, while the other sections I mentioned are the trickiest and most confusing (they have temporary text that's there as a starting point to save work, but it isn't accurate for many of the countries - for example, I used "parliament" in the template used to generate these because it fits many countries and produces a blue link, but there are a lot of countries that don't have parliaments and so it needs to be corrected for those. Some countries don't have presidents, some don't have prime ministers, etc.). If we leave the temporary text on the pages where it isn't correct, we'll get a lot of people pointing out "errors" that we already know about.
The first task I need you to do is...
In the section "Regions of x" (where x is the country's name), there's a section hatnote "Main article: Regions of x".
That hatnote is for the general context of the word "regions". However, some countries have administrative divisions called "regions", similar to the word "province". For those countries, that hatnote is in the wrong context and needs to be removed.
If a country doesn't have administrative divisions called "regions", leave the hatnote in place, even if it is a redlink.
Did that make sense?
Tabs and tabbing using Firefox and Linky will help immensely on this task.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me (on my talk page, so Wikipedia's alert feature will catch my attention).
Thank you, and good luck. ;)

- Ouch. I didn't see your reply until just now. Replying on both your talk page and mine speeds things up, because Wikipedia alerts the user when messages are posted to his talk page. I talk to so many people that I have to rely on the alert to keep track of threads, but that only works if you post something to my talk page. Even if it's only a "heads up" to let me know you've answered on your talk page. The Transhumanist 20:32, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
- I looked those over, and removed "regions" from the section on administrative divisions for all the pages except those you identified. Thank you.
- Ready for your next task, eh? OK, here goes...
- Each of the pages needs a description in its lead section. So we're copying the lead paragraphs from the corresponding country articles to these pages. They don't fit perfectly in context because many of them repeat information that we are presenting in the outlines themselves, but they are a good starting point which we can prune in subsequent passes.
- I'd like you to start with the Z's and work your way back through the alphabet. Sharkface is working from the other end. I think he's gotten through the Cs so far. So you've got some catching up to do. :)
- Before you save each paste, please linkify the name of the country at the beginning of the lead. Also, please remove the pronunciation - that's too much clutter for simplified pages like these.
- If you have any questions, please let me know on my talk page.
- Good luck.
- Have fun.

What is Around the World?
It's a collaboration!
A collaboration using advanced wiki-tools!
The event is being co-sponsored by Wikiproject Lists of basic topics and WikiProject Geography, and participants will be "traveling" all around "the World" visiting each country online (here on Wikipedia and perhaps beyond) as they apply advanced wiki-tools to improve pieces of the profiles of each and every country on Earth!. Each pass through these pages is a "trip around the World..."
The set of pages we are working on is currently located at Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of basic topics.
Each page presents essential information on each country in a topic outline format, for ease of overviewing and navigating. Most of the topics presented are linkified, which turns these pages into a hypertextual map to material about each country on Wikipedia. When completed, they shall all become part of Wikipedia's contents system.
The pages share a standard format, with the information on each country presented in the same general order. So rather than getting stuck on a single country trying to complete it, each participant works on all 200+ political entities, completing a single data item or detail across all of the pages!
For this they use advanced tools like WP:AWB, Linky, etc. It goes fast, and since others are doing this at the same time, it makes "the World" feel like a beehive, and the participants are its bees. :) The energy is contagious.
And since you are moving from country to country, the tasks make it feel like you are traveling around the world, and you get to learn a little about every country as you do so. This approach also allows for greater efficiency, because by the time you've done 30 or so of a particular item, you've figured out how to finish it faster and more effectively (such as where to find the data or how to make adjustments), and this specialization speeds up development - but more importantly it reduces errors.
The tasks are varied, which adds even more variety to the project. Some tasks are look-ups-and-fill-ins, some are copy and paste, some are image hunts, some are maintenance adjustments, some are link fixing, some are blue-linking (creating an underlying redirect so a link turns blue), some are fact checking, etc.
For an example of what a nearly complete page looks like, see these:
- List of basic Albania topics • List of basic Argentina topics • List of basic Australia topics • List of basic Canada topics • List of basic Ecuador topics • List of basic Egypt topics • List of basic France topics • List of basic Germany topics • List of basic Iceland topics • List of basic India topics • List of basic Indonesia topics • List of basic Iraq topics • List of basic Republic of Ireland topics • List of basic Italy topics • List of basic Isle of Man topics • List of basic Israel topics • List of basic Japan topics • List of basic Macau topics • List of basic Mexico topics • List of basic Russia topics • List of basic Taiwan topics • List of basic United Kingdom topics • List of basic United States topics
There are only about 200 more pages to go!
Standing by to help are co-coordinators, who can lend a helping hand to participants, provide instruction and tips on how to use the tools, and help them find what they are looking for. Co-coordinators also use advanced tools to inspect the work of participants, and touch it up as needed, or if a task was done wrong throughout, point this out to the participant so he or she can make the necessary corrections.
Co-coordinators are working on the set of pages right now, to familiarize themselves with "the World" so they can help more effectively by the time the main event starts. But there's still lots of preparation left to be done, and we are looking for editors experienced in advanced wikitools who would like to become co-coordinators.

Still Adopting?
Hello! I was wondering if you would perhaps like to adopt me? I've been making random minor edits anonymously for a year or two, and finally got myself registered but now...I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do. I'm very interested in the Buddhism WikiProject. I'm just very worried about stepping on others' toes because I have come to realize I have no idea how any sort of organization procedures work here. I am clueless to the organizational hierarchy her and any of the articles/topics I've read on the subject haven't really cleared that much up for me.
And if you can't adopt me, do you have any suggestions of someone who might be better suited for helping me? Thanks! --gardsmyg (talk) 17:55, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
- Definitely! I'm on vacation right now but I'll be back contributing as usual on 10 July. Do you have any specific questions in the meantime? Give me an idea of what you're interested in working on here. Buddhism is a big topic; do you have narrower interests within Buddhism? Do you want to write articles, cleanup articles or perform more "behind the scenes" work like article assessment? Let me know and we'll figure out where to go from there.
- If you want to get started in the meantime, check out the list below. Don't worry about stepping on toes. We encourage editors to be bold! If anyone gives you any trouble, it's alright, they're in the wrong. You're a good faith editor, and any mistakes you might make can easily be remedied.
- Cheers, Gimme danger (talk) 17:49, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for all information! I hope you have a nice rest of your vacation.
- I think probably what I'm more interested in is the behind-the-scenes stuff and cleanup. Minor edits, fixing errors, maybe expanding a little on certain subjects. I don't quite think I have the gumption or time to really write articles from scratch or do any major overhaul work. Maybe sometime in the future, but not right now.
- I'm trying to digest as many of the Wikipedia:articles as possible. I'm starting to learn more about markup and what templates are, but so far I haven't come across anything about etiquette. When is it appropriate to discuss something before making changes? When is it appropriate to remove flags? Should you even remove flags? Et cetera. --gardsmyg (talk) 18:35, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
- PS: As far as Buddhism goes, I'm more interested in general principal and nuance between cultural interpretation, as well as mythos. I don't know where that leaves me. --gardsmyg (talk) 18:37, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
- Excellent. Cleanup and all that is my area of expertise. I would suggest that you read the links in the welcome box that I posted on your talk page for more information. If you have any questions about it, ask me here for now. I'll get a wikiclassroom setup in the next few days where we can keep everything related to your adoption together.
- By "flags" do you mean maintenance tags like {{Unreferenced}} and {{cleanup}} ? You can remove those tags when the problem that they indicate has been corrected. Sometimes editors will cleanup an article and forget to remove the tag, so if you can't find any problems, feel free to remove the tag. Sometimes there will be a discussion of the problems indicated by the tag on the talk page, but in my experience this is rare, even though it's supposed to be standard practice.
- As to discussion, you never are required to discuss changes before making them. However, on frequently edited pages you should discuss any large changes, deletions or additions that are likely to be controversial, just to save time. On infrequently edited pages, there might not be anyone watching the article, or talk page posts may not generate a response. In this case, use the Bold, Revert, Discuss method, wherein you can attract interested editors by making a bold change. Just make sure not to revert back if your edit is reverted and go directly to discussion. Gimme danger (talk) 19:49, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
- PS: As far as Buddhism goes, I'm more interested in general principal and nuance between cultural interpretation, as well as mythos. I don't know where that leaves me. --gardsmyg (talk) 18:37, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure if being bold is in my personality, but I will certainly keep it in mind and try to employ the idea. Too timid of the sea that is Wikipedia, I suppose. Don't particularly feel like drowning.
- Any other nuggets of wisdom? Thoughts on what might be a good place to actually take the plunge? --gardsmyg (talk) 01:50, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
Clarification
On that task I assigned above, if an alternate name is used for the country at the beginning of the lead, use this form instead:
Botswana, officially known as the Republic of Botswana,
Sometimes, it will start out like this:
Chad (French: Tchad; Arabic: تشاد), officially the Republic of Chad, is a landlocked country in central Africa.
In which case, change it to:
Chad, officially known as the Republic of Chad, is a landlocked country in central Africa.
Check out the pages that have been done so far to see how we've presented the leads.
Good luck.
The Transhumanist 21:11, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
What browser do you use?
The reason I ask is that there is a Firefox-specific layout graphics problem that needs to be fixed using Firefox (you need Firefox to see it, but I haven't had it checked it on all versions of IE yet).
On each page is a box which pairs the country's flag and coat of arms. On Firefox their heights don't match. Their sizes need to be adjusted so their heights match. Many have been done (one person was working from A and the other from Z, but I don't think anyone is working on them currently).
On at least one version of Windows, the flag and coat of arms match up automatically.
Please check to see how these work on the browsers you have.
The Transhumanist 01:01, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
- I use Firefox, but I'm terrible at layout sort of things. I can give it a shot after I finish with administrative divisions though. --Gimme danger (talk) 05:05, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
- It's easy. There are two numbers given. Just adjust one of those numbers until the image heights match up. There's really no layout work involved. Just adjusting the pictures' sizes so their heights match. Piece of pie. I mean Easy as cake. I mean it's a piece of cake, and easy as pie. :) The Transhumanist 20:06, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
- I currently don't have access to Firefox, and I'm stuck with Explorer on a library computer. On this version of IE, the images match up, but on Firefox they don't.

Would you care to comment on the proposed move from 'Allegations of...' to '... controversy'?. I noticed that you appeared to be unhappy about the last move and afterwards asked Cumulus Clouds to comment, so I'd like to be sure you get a chance to comment fully in your own right before any move this time. Dakinijones (talk) 12:32, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

More tasks
Your access has ramped up just in time, because mine has just dived. For the foreseeable future, I will have an hour or so per day on Wikipedia if I'm lucky. I'm so glad you've become available. I will devote most of my limited time on Wik to supporting your efforts and help you get up to speed. Here are some more tasks for you to work on when you are done with the leads:
Track down the administrative divisions types for each country
After the leads are done, the next task is on the "Administrative divisions of" sections.
In each of these sections, there's an initial hierarchical list of the division types in that country, followed by subheadings for each of the types. Unfortunately, the types listed are those from the template I used to create these pages, and they aren't accurate for many of the pages.
The defaults that I used were:
For each country, change the links to the names of the, adding links if necessary. Those that are subdivisions of another type are indented under that type. In most cases, you would leave municipalities in place, because that's a generic name for "city". We'll blue-link those later.
Also change the subheadings in the same section to match the initial list, including the "main" links presented just below the subheadings.
The administrative divisions for a country are usually in the government of x or politics of x page for that country, and can most often be found on a country's main article ("x") as well.
Add the administrative divisions to their respective subsections
For each country, find the list of administrative division for each type, and add them under that type's subheading.
For example, copy and paste the provinces listed at Provinces of Angola under the "Provinces of Angola" subheading on that country's list page.
See the countries listed at Lists of basic topics for examples of this has been done for those. If there's a map showing the administrative divisions, grab it too.
Generally do not add towns and cities to the municipalities section, as there are usually way too many of them (and will unnecessarily bloat the page). Instead, provide links to the various pages (Cities of x, [[[Towns of x]], Villages of x, etc.
You don't need to do all of the above in one pass. For example, you could do all the top-level administrative divisions for each country first, then in another pass take on the next level, etc.
The Transhumanist 01:01, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
P.S.: Have fun!
P.P.S.: Are the above tasks understandable? Do you need me to clarify anything? If so, let me know.

issues with an IP on South Asia regarding Tibet
I am having issues with an IP regarding Tibet. They have been citing A History of Modern Tibet, 1913-1951 by Goldstein and one other book. I feel their citations somewhat ignore the pro-Tibetan information in favor of the anti-Tibetan/pro-PRC information. If you have read these books or have access to these books, please help. Thegreyanomaly (talk) 08:10, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
Firstly, please kindly review what I added (and once partially removed/vandalised by user:Thegreyanomaly):
Tibet at times has governed itself as an independent state and at other times has had various levels of association with China[1], it became under Chinese control in the 18th century in spite of British efforts to seize possession of this Chinese protectorate at the beginning of the 20th century.[2][3][4]
The content above is well-balanced NPOV and well-sourced, UserThegreyanomaly's removal seems more like vandalism or POV pushing.
Secondly, I would like to show you the vandalism-like behaviour by user:Thegreyanomaly: [1] Obviously, with no explanation User:Thegreyanomaly removed the Unreferenced tag that I added here. It's obviously vandalism.
Please let me know if there is any question. 219.73.86.234 (talk) 08:45, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

- ^ Gernet, J., Foster, J.R. & Hartman C., A History of Chinese Civilization, Cambridge University Press, 1982, p481, reads in part: "From 1751 onwards Chinese control over Tibet became permanent and remained so more or less ever after, in spite of British efforts to seize possession of this Chinese protectorate at the beginning of the twentieth century."

The ambans were given rights of control and supervision and since 1792 also a direct participation in the Tibetan government."

“They are for discussion related to improving the article.” That was exactly the idea, even if the comment was a bit short. Argumentation: _
From Wikipedia “Freedom of religion is the freedom of an individual or community, in public or private, to manifest religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship, and observance. Freedom of religion is considered by many in many nations and people to be a fundamental human right. [1] Today there are concerns about the persecution of religious minorities in the Muslim world and in some Communist states such as China and North Korea, as well as other forms of intolerance in other countries, for example banning the wearing of prominent religious articles such as the Muslim veil in some contexts in European countries. [2] Freedom of religion as a legal concept is related to, but not identical with, religious toleration, separation of church and state, or laïcité (a secular state). The Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the fifty eight Member States of the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948, at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, France defines freedom of religion and belief as follows: "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship, and observance." ... “
Some of the arguments were that the people of China supports the Panchen lama or not, and in that case how many of them. Actually, it doesn`t really matter, just as much as it would´t matter if the people of Finland or Sweden would do it. The chosing of the person for the religious title is not the Chinese Goverments problem. The Chinese Goverment is not a religious instansce. And the pople of China do not practice tibeten buddism, exept the ones who are in fact religious tibetans and live on Chinese territory. Who the religiouos leader is according to the finnish, swedish or chinese people is not really relevant since they do not practice the belive. Yours sincerely w.

You deleting other's contributions
Thanks for the message. If you choose to delete other people's contributions in discussions on the basis that they do not contribute to a better article, could you please be more even handed and delete arguments from both sides, rather than just deleting arguments that oppose your POV? 86.161.56.118 (talk) 23:54, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for your concern. I do delete off-topic posts from both sides and thus have been accused of POV-pushing by both pro-Tibet and pro-CCP editors. I'm not sure which bias I'm supposed to push now, so I think I'll just continue doing as I have been doing.--Gimme danger (talk) 00:53, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
I made a reply to the contribution in the Discussion of the Tibet article by a Kauffner below:
Russell Means issued a proclamation of indepedence for the "Republic of Lakotah" back in December.[2] It got a lot of publicity considering that Means isn't the head of any tribe and basically just represents himself. I've noticed that the usual Chinese response to a comment about Tibet is talk about American Indians, Hawaii, Corisca -- pretty much anything except Tibet. Tibetans just want to have democracy and free elections, and say goodbye to unelected communist leaders -- not so different than most Chinese. But somehow Chinese can't see it that way. Kauffner (talk) 14:04, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
You deleted my reply to Kauffner because according to you it does not improve the Article. Can you tell me how Kauffner's above contribution can help improve the article?
If you allow Kauffner's contribution, (presumably because you feel it helps improve the article) then you should allow the reply to it.

- ... I've definitely been failing on the getting stuff done front. Sorry about that. I guess I haven't figured out a fast way to do the administrative districts thing. Do we want tables with populations and things? --Gimme danger (talk) 21:42, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Tables would be very time consuming. Simple lists copied and pasted from wherever they are on Wikipedia would probably be fastest. If they are already in table format, that's fine. We'll just make use of what is available. Lists of admin divs can be found in the country articles, in regions of x, and/or administrative divisions of x.
- For speed, split the task up. For example, do the little hierarchical list of administrative districts first (for all of the countries). Then fix the subheadings for the administrative divisions section for all the countries. Then add the maps and lists of administrative districts (easier to do these two in the same step).
- I'm in the process of recruiting more people to help you, so you won't feel all alone. ;)
- Also, you'll probably see me here and there on those pages - I've been filling in the location field for all the countries. It's a hierarchical list similar to the admin div hierarchical list. Check it out. If I can do it, so can you -- I've been using Wikipedia:OTS#Tabs_and_tabbing including Linky (for Firefox), a combination I find much faster than AWB for many tasks. Have fun. Feel free to contact me again if you start feeling lonely. :)
- You are using Firefox, aren't you? If not, you should install it right away, and Linky too!
Come to think of it, if you explain in detail how you are doing the task, I may be able to provide better pointers. For example, I get around Wikipedia very fast, and have ways to work on many pages that I take for granted. (I often construct temporary lists of pages in a sandbox for navigation and task gathering, for example, by various techniques). Maybe you aren't using the same methods. So it would help me to know what methods you are using. The Transhumanist 19:18, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

There is only one section left (including its subsections) that needs to be completed before the pages are ready for Around the World:
- Branches of the government of x
- Executive branch of the government of x
- Legislative branch of the government of x
- Judicial branch of the government of x
There are a few more things that need to be completed before the lists can be moved into the main namespace:
- Fill in the blanks, and blank [[]]'s
- Population:
- Size:
- "(specific elections)" needs to be replaced by links to specific elections (by year, usually)
- International organization membership
- Commander-in-chief: [[]]
- Economic rank:
- Currency of x:
- Blue-linking (creating redirects for) standardized items for which the articles' names are not standardized:
- Fix other temporary links
- World Heritage sites in x (they all point to the same place, and need to be fixed)
- "Capital of x" needs to be replaced with the actual capital name
- Material in the lead paragraph(s) that is covered in the body of the list needs to be removed from (or moved from) the lead.
- Fill in the External Links section
Moving these lists into the main namespace could have a huge impact on their development, because then each list will fall under the scope of the WikiProjects of the respective countries. That's a lot of WikiProjects that may become involved with refining and maintaining these lists.
The move will be accompanied with the placing of new sections on each of the WikiProject pages, their talk pages, placing banners on the talk pages of each list, and including links to these lists in hatnotes on the relevant articles and portals, and placing section links in the see also sections of relevant articles (Geography of x, Military of x, etc.). Lots of AWB work.

Copy edit request
Hey. I was just wondering if you could please copy-edit the Pilot (30 Rock) article. It's been suggested at its FAC that it should go under a copy-edit throughout. Thanks for any help. -- [User]Jamie JCA[Talk] 17:55, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi! I'm back!
Hello. Remember that "the less time I seem to have, the more I actually get done" thing? Yeah, that didn't work out as well as I had hoped. This is the first time I've even been on the internet since May. Oh, well. Anyway, I'll hopefully have more time now for Wikipedia. I intend to work mostly on the religion wikiproject for a while. I just wanted to let you know I didn't fall off the face of the earth. A pyrate's life for me... (talk) 12:23, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- Hey there, good to see you. I've set up an adoption classroom for you at User:Gimme danger/Adoption/Pyrate, so we can keep everything in one place. There's a place for you to ask questions. If there's something you want to learn more about, I can think up an assignment, an informal way for you to try out a new skill and for me to see if there's any help I can offer. When you get a chance, come up with a few ideas for a more substantial project that you'd like to try, after which I will declare you officially graduated. What are you thinking about doing for the Religion WikiProject? --Gimme danger (talk) 03:34, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
- Additionally, if you want to work with religion, I'm going to start a project soon dealing with the Dalai Lamas and perhaps some of the religious concepts related to that lineage. It might be fun to work on together. --Gimme danger (talk) 03:37, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Navy redirects
We've been "bluelinking" the Navy of x links in the basic topic country lists, by creating redirects for them, even for the countries that have no navy.
There's been a little controversy over the navy redirects for the landlocked countries (many of which have no navy), as you can see above. But it's all been worked out. Each country with no navy gets a redirect to wherever it is reported that it has no navy, or failing that, to its "military of" article.
The country lists are coming along slowing but surely. It shouldn't take too much longer before they will be complete enough to move into article space (!), but I can still use all the help I can get. (hint hint).

We could sure use your help in bluelinking the links in these lists (the links also appear in the various country basic topic lists):

Edit on Ladakh Page
Hi nice to see your message, I was unable to see your message at time, I am sorry about that. I was just checking the site today and found that the page edit by me was not listed there, after that I tried to edit it once again but unable to do that. Then I sign in and found your message.
You have mention that the link was for advertising or for promotional purposes. Yes it is but that is to for promote the Tourism of Ladakh. There is no such site which provides the information link this site.
You will find almost every thing on this site about Ladakh like information on 15 NGO's, Monasteries, Trekking and Rafting and 173 Travel agents with complete address and there phone # so that the traveler can contact them to get the information. You will find the information of 33 Monasteries in this site which is not available on net on any site.
I have see some the site which is listed under External links of Wikipedia which dose not carry that much of information but still if you think that this site is not helping anyone or not provide that much of information to world then don't add this link. But I am sure that this is the site which provides most of the information for travelers about Ladakh.
I will request you to add this link under External links so that the world can get the right and complete information on Ladakh so that we can help to grow the Tourism of Ladakh.

Spamming in Sikkim eh?
The link given has legitimate relevance to the Northeast India , Sikkim included, in case if you have not noticed. I hope you have taken the time to see the website and see if it is relevant to Northeast States. For any person trying to know about Northeast India or any of the states, he/she would like to know of external links that would provide more information. However I respect your endeavor to stop spamming. I am all for stopping spamming. What I cannot understand is how are the rest of of the external links already present in Sikkim different from the one I have addded? Ingudam (talk) 16:50, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
- I have looked at the website. It appears to be an amalgam of a social networking site, a travel website and a popular magazine. I don't see it's purpose on Wikipedia. If there are other spam sites on Sikkim, feel free to remove them. The existence of other spam on the page does not affect the appropriateness of your link. --Gimme danger (talk) 17:35, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Status report on the Country outlines (Around the World) project
Penubag has been hard at work developing awards for this project. He has completed a very professional looking medal, and is almost done with a trophy that is truly awesome - both of these awards are visually stunning.
I and a few others have been working steadily on the country outlines - one for every country of the world! They're shaping up nicely. So far, 28 of them have been moved to article space - these aren't complete, but they are complete enough to be made available for readers to benefit from them. The rest of the set still includes temporary data that was generated by template (because it matched most but not all of the countries), and before the lists can be moved to article space, all the temporary data needs to be checked for accuracy, and if incorrect it needs to be replaced with correct information.
The effort on the lists has been on 3 fronts:
- Working on the lists in article space to complete them so they will be good examples for editors working on the rest of the set.
- Adding or correcting other data (fixing redlinks, filling in blanks, etc.). The main type of work participants in "the contest" will be doing. The reason we're doing this is to get a feel for it, to develop the fastest methods for each type of task, etc.
- Improving the overall design and implenting changes on all 247 pages, whether in article space or not.
There has been some opposition to us running the contest based on edit counts or iterations. The concern is that we should reward quality work and not quantity, for fear of crappy edits done quickly without thought. I pointed out that the collection of pages are drafts in the Wikipedia namespace (therefore posing no danger to article space) and that most of the work needs to be done with power tools like AWB and Linky (which are specifically designed for repetitive work), but the reply was that we shouldn't set the precedent of rewarding barnstars for numerically-based tasks, and implied the threat of continuously MfD'ing the contest if we attempted to do so (like they did with the Awards Center - I was very surprised and disappointed that participants didn't step up to defend it). So we need to be careful in determining what exactly the awards will represent, and how they will be awarded.
Since rewarding iterations (passes with AWB on all of the pages in the set) are out, we really don't need the globe in stand anymore. Two awards should suffice.
Once we get started with the contest, I'd like to kick the whole thing off with a round of medals for those dedicated few who have worked hard on the project so far.
What do you think of all of this?
Your comments and suggestions are most welcome.
The Transhumanist 23:20, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Ready for another task?
Here's an interesting one for you: please fill in the commander-in-chief for each page listed at User:The Transhumanist/Country list.
It needs to include the name of the position and the name of the incumbent holding the position.
For example, it's been completed on the Topic outline of Algeria, and looks like this:
The commander-in-chief can usually be found in the Military of x article for a county, and it is also usually mentioned in the article on the head of state position (such as President of x or in the article on the incumbent himself (or herself). It needs to be tracked down for every country.
Good luck.
Have fun.

Village Christian Academy
You tagged Village Christian Academy as csd-a1, no context. I did a Google search for the school's name and address, and found that it is located in Fayetteville, North Carolina. From that, I was able to locate and add a reference. Sometimes when an article appears to lack context, a quick Google search will allow an editor to add context and create a stub worth keeping. -- Eastmain (talk) 22:16, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- I appreciate your point of view and your willingness to put in the effort to improve Wikipedia. In general, I believe that secondary schools are non-notable without demonstrated significant coverage and that a stub article is often worse than no article at all. Since there was no context in the article that allowed me to understand the basic nature of the topic, I thought it was worthy of deletion. Clearly, now it is not. Thank you for your note. --Gimme danger (talk) 22:24, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello!
You may be interested to know that WikiProject Punk music has recently undergone a major revitalization. Please visit the project page to see our new look and check out some of our helpful new features, such as the Assessment Department and the Collaboration of the week. There are also a number of tasks on our Things to do page that you may be interested in helping with.
We are currently holding a roll call to help gauge how many active project members we have. Please visit the project's talk page and add your signature to the roll sheet to express your continued interest in the project. Also, if you have not already done so, please take a minute to add your name to the Participants page along with a brief summary of your punk-related interests, so that other project members will be better able to collaborate with you. If you do not add your signature to the roll sheet by November 30, 2008 your name will be moved to our list of inactive members. We may also take the liberty of removing the project userbox from your userpage if it appears there, to prevent you from automatically appearing in Category:WikiProject Punk music members. Of course you are free to rejoin the project and re-add the userbox at any time if you would like to become active in the project again.
Thank you and we hope you will continue to support WikiProject Punk music!
You are receiving this message because you have previously identified yourself as a member of WikiProject Punk music, either because your name appears on the Participants page or because you have placed the project userbox on your user page. As a courtesy, if you have left the project, retired from Wikipedia, or simply no longer wish to be an active project member, please remove the userbox from your user page. This will remove you from Category:WikiProject Punk music members and help the project to keep its active membership list up-to-date. |

Hi Gimme Danger. I have had some one elses help, Gran2. (I don't know if you know him).
Why do you keep removing discussion? Message from XENUcomplaints? leave me a message! 16:45, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
- Per Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines, talk pages are to be used for improving the article and not for general discussion. It is explicitly permitted to remove talk page comments that are not aimed toward improving the article. The Tibet talk page in particular tends to be a gathering place of polemic that needs to be cleaned out on a regular basis. As I am a falliable creature, it is possible that I've accidentally removed discussion that was not generic bickering about the Tibet situation and had something to do with the language, sources or structure of the article. If so, I apologize. --Gimme danger (talk) 17:11, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hey why don't you revert the wholesale deletion by Bertport, but revert other's deletion based on Bertport's behavior? Glad I got you to do something, at least. 81.155.96.136 (talk) 01:19, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- I'm unsure what you are trying to say here. You may find this page relevant to future endeavors on Wikipedia. --Gimme danger (talk) 01:40, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- What? Go through the editing, and you will see Bertport was the one who started deleting the discussions. Food for the gander is also food for the geese. 81.155.96.136 (talk) 01:56, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- Ah, I see what you're getting at. Well, the edits in question were ones in which you deleted discussions that had direct relevance to improving the article. I still suggest that you read WP:POINT carefully. Wholesale deletion of on-topic discussion because you are upset that someone else has deleted off-topic discussion is disruptive editing to prove a point and not considered acceptable behavior on Wikipedia.--Gimme danger (talk) 02:56, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- So how did what were deleted improve the article? They were deleted for the same reason as bertport's reason. Fair's fair. 81.155.96.136 (talk) 17:33, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- You can tell the difference between off-topic and on-topic discussions because has the article as its object, whereas an off-topic discussion has the article's topic as its object. Do you see the difference?
- For example, "This article is non-neutral because it puts undue weight on the idea that the Dalai Lama eats kittens. According to Reliable Mainstream Source, this is a fringe viewpoint and shouldn't be mentioned five times, like it is in the current article these places (LIST OF PLACES)" is a helpful, appropriate comment. "Everybody knows that the g-d Chinese are lying about the Dalai Lama", followed by a discussion of the demonization of Jews in Nazi Germany, is NOT about the article, it is about the topic in general.
- Persons who wish to discuss Tibet/Tibetan independence/Chinese politics have the rest of the internet. Here, we are writing an encyclopedia. The discussions that Bertport deleted were inappropriate for Wikipedia; the discussions that you deleted to prove a point were appropriate for Wikipedia. Remember, before you press "Save page", you like all editors should consider how your edit improves the encyclopedia.--Gimme danger (talk) 00:54, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- So how did what were deleted improve the article? They were deleted for the same reason as bertport's reason. Fair's fair. 81.155.96.136 (talk) 17:33, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
