List of railway stations in Cornwall
Hi Duncan, I notice you are one of the main editors of List of railway stations in Cornwall. I have recently added a secondary list and a map to this page. Please have a look and leave any comments to my talk page. Best wishes, Andy F (talk) 13:25, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Transport in Cornwall
Hi Duncan, I have been working on the Transport in Cornwall page and today I have uploaded a substantial expansion of the article. As you have been a major contributor to the article, I would be very grateful if you would have a look at what I've uploaded. Please expand it and/or edit it as necessary; you can also leave comments and suggestions on my talk page, of course. I intend to add a section (which I am researching at the moment) about Cornwall County Council's transport policy and plans. Also, I feel the article needs further expansion of the sections on bus travel and air travel. Best wishes, Andy F (talk) 12:55, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Lizard complex
Hi Duncan,
Thanks for catching that, just having a 'baby with the bathwater' moment. I started looking at this article in response to your request back in May, sorry it's taken so long to get this far. All the stuff on the Serpentinites and the Oceanic Complex needs a complete rewrite and updating. I will endeavour to get onto that soon, before Christmas rolls over me anyway, with a bit if luck. Stop that
Such an edit summary is absolutely inappropriate. If you continue editing in this way, you will be blocked (either by me or another admin) for disruptive editing. Therefore, please stop and stay civil. —αἰτίας •discussion• 20:58, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- I think it is absolutely inappropriate for admins to ignore persistent vandalism which has been properly reported. Unfortunately, that is what happened. DuncanHill (talk) 21:00, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- DuncanHill, completely regardless of what happened at WP:RFPP such an edit summary is per se simply not acceptable. —αἰτίας •discussion• 21:07, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- I disagree - it was a critical commentary on the action (or lack of it) of admins monitoring that page. I take it you had the page watchlisted? DuncanHill (talk) 21:09, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- I don't think any block would hold - if admins don't like "disrespectful" edit summaries or complaining posts then they shouldn't be doing the job; it is about effectiveness and not praise seeking. I certainly would bring such a block up on a noticeboard. LessHeard vanU (talk) 21:10, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- The word “crap” is not “disrespectful” it is plainly insulting/offensive. There would be nothing wrong with “disrespectful” or critical comments/edit summaries, however there is something wrong with insulting/offensive comments/edit summaries. —αἰτίας •discussion• 21:24, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Would "admins are useless" meet with your approval in a similar situation? And, did you have the page watchlisted? I asked before, but you didn't answer. DuncanHill (talk) 21:25, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- This has nothing to do with my “approval”. “Useless” has simply another and no offensive meaning, while “crap” evidently has a completely different, offensive meaning. Thus, nothing would have been wrong with useless, of course. To answer your question, yeah, I have WP:RFPP watchlisted. —αἰτίας •discussion• 21:30, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Personally (and this may be a result of cultural differences between us) I see nothing inherently more offensive in describing someone as crap than in describing them as useless - the two terms are often synonymous in my dialect of English. I assume that, although you had the page watchlisted, you missed all the preceding attempts by me to get an admin to address the situation? DuncanHill (talk) 21:33, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- multiple (edit conflicts) Oh, okay, in this case I have to apologise. I never heard that “crap” means something like useless as well. I just knew the word “crap” to be vulgar and offensive slang. - Indeed - but then I am a Brit too, I recognise crap as a mild expletive and perhaps not even that. Can you imagine the drama that would ensue if I warned and blocked every Yank editor that included the term fanny? LessHeard vanU (talk) 21:45, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

RE:Royal Medallists
Suredy! At the moment the plan is to get the list up to FL level (compare before my changes and after) and for that there has to be lots and lots of pretty bluelinks and as few redlinks as possible. My plan once it is done is to go back to what I was doing beforehand; expanding the articles currently present, standardising them, bringing in infoboxes, so on. Any help would be much appreciated. Re:Africa in the 60s
I can remember someone saying one time how it was impossible to raise any topic in Britain's House of Lords - with 1000 experts on trivia in that place, there was bound to be someone who was either an expert on the subject or who had a personal connection with it somehow. Wikipedia's a bit like that. No matter what subject you talk about, someone's bound to have some sort of personal connection somewhere! Malawi's one former British African country my dad never travelled to (he spent most of his time in Ghana, but also was in Sierra Leone, Gambia, Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda). Grutness...wha? 22:25, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
- My dad ran a small business which had branches in "British Africa", so often travelled to meet local representatives and government officials. Think that Nkrumah was the only head of state he met, though. Grutness...wha? 22:33, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
- Heh - no. Long story, but the business was connected with football, and liaised with various African sports bodies. Grutness...wha? 22:46, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

North Cornwall parishes nav box
Hi Duncan, I've made a start on redlinked places and parishes as suggested. In the case of St Minver Highlands and St Minver Lowlands, I've created two redirects both pointing to St Minver and extended that article substantially, explaining the nominal division of the parish into two halves - hope that's the best way. Best wishes, Andy F (talk) 11:54, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hi again Duncan, I have a query about the parishes nav box. I've been plodding through it as time allows and I notice there's a redlinked entry St Stephens, Cornwall. Well, there are three parishes of that name in Cornwall. One is near St Austell, one is near Saltash, and the one I think the box refers to; St Stephen-by-Launceston which is in Launceston Registration District. Rather than setting up a dab page and redirects, would it be easier to alter the wording on the template to read 'St Stephen-by-Launceston, Cornwall'? Let me know on my talk page. Best wishes, Andy F (talk) 22:46, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply and kind words, Duncan. Yup, it is St Stephen-by-Launceston (singular, no possessive 's') - well spotted. If you set up the dab page, I'll get the article(s) done ASAP. Warm wishes as always, Andy F (talk) 22:55, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
- PS And just to complicate things, searching OS gives four places under St Stephen, one in Herts, three in Cornwall. Of the Cornish three, one is the claypit village St Stephen (singular) on the Sn'Ozzle- Newquay road; the others are St Stephens with an 's'; one immediately north of Launceston, t'other on the southern edge of Saltash. Andy F (talk) 23:10, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Good morning, Duncan, here's another query. In the nav box there is an entry for St Thomas the Apostle Rural. I can't find that name listed on Genuki - does the nav box entry refer to St Thomas-by-Launceston parish ? Drop me a line in 'St Stephens' on my talk page. Best wishes, Andy F (talk) 11:42, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
- OK Duncan, many thanks for the useful links re St Thomas. I've just done South Petherwin - next I'll have a go at St Thomas. We should have the whole nav box bluelinked by Christmas! Cheers, Andy F (talk) 12:06, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
- I've done St Thomas. Please check I've got it right! Best, Andy F (talk) 19:30, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
Done! Not a redlinked parish left in Template:North Cornwall navigation box. Now all it needs is someone to check and expand the articles. Best wishes, Andy F (talk) 21:03, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you! :) Andy F (talk) 09:50, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Caradon Parishes Nav Box
Hi Duncan, I've made a start on the redlinked parishes in the Template:Caradon navigation box. Meanwhile, I am continuing to add coords to the articles listed in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cornwall#Missing geographical coordinates (as well as checking coords in other articles). Any thoughts or suggestions, you know where to find me. Warm regards, Andy F (talk) 15:50, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
- Duncan, I've hit a similar problem to our St Stephens dilemma. There seem to be two Lanteglos parishes - the one in the Caradon nav box and the one up by Camelford. Please can you have a look and, if necessary, alter the entry in the Caradon nav box to read Lanteglos-by-Fowey. Let me know - meanwhile I'll do the other CPs in the nav box and come back to Lanteglos later. Ta, Andy F (talk) 22:29, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
- Duncan, I see you've done a dab page for Lanteglos. Ta. I'll get the articles done ASAP. Andy F (talk) 09:30, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Kurt Weber
Kurt has decided to jump before a whole bunch of people pushed him, so that discussion's over.
I understand your concern that I was canvassing. I had merely decided to alert everyone who had expressed interest in having such a discussion during the ArbCom vote (granted, they all had one point of view, but had anyone expressed opposition to banning him I would have let them know too). Since the last one was sort of quickly buried for perfectly legit reasons, I thought someone might try to do the same thing this time, and that people should at least know there was an attempt to have it. I'm glad to see that such measures are not necessary, and I won't be doing it in the future (I don't post to AN much, as you can probably tell).
BTW, while we're at it, suggesting I get blocked doesn't go over that well either (Believe me I know ... I did it once myself a long time ago when I was upset about a discussion even being started). Daniel Case (talk) 03:49, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- You selected people who had stated that they wanted him banned. Contacting only people who you already know support your position is canvassing, it is contrary to policy, and more important, it is unethical. DuncanHill (talk) 12:34, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- Only three had. The rest had said merely that they were surprised he wasn't banned, which is not the same exact thing. They could perhaps have stated differently when the actual question was called.
In any event, only one of those people responded before the discussion was archived, so obviously it wasn't necessary.
I admit that if I had this to do over again I probably wouldn't have let people know, but you should know there was a lot of email flying around about this too. Better to do it in the open, I think. And, as I said, advocating that someone get blocked for opening a discussion in good faith (and canvassing does not imply a lack of good faith) is not exemplary conduct either. You don't have totally clean hands here either. Let's agree that we both could have done this better, and leave it at that. Daniel Case (talk) 16:32, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- Only three had. The rest had said merely that they were surprised he wasn't banned, which is not the same exact thing. They could perhaps have stated differently when the actual question was called.
- We may have to agree to disagree on this, I think. I'll certainly agree that an open request is far preferable to the back-stairs (even underhand) shenanigans of some of those wanting a ban - and yes, I am aware that some members have been lobbying off-wiki to get a block and then a ban in place. I just find it very hard to understand how an admin (or any experienced editor) could think that it was OK to canvass in that way - next time though, I'll ask the person who does it for an explanation before suggesting a block. As you rightly say above, you don't come to AN much, so maybe you've just not experienced the sort of problems that such behaviour can cause. Anyway, Kurt is gone, which will please some and sadden others - but it certainly won't lead to any significant reduction in the nonsense on AN and ANI. DuncanHill (talk) 16:49, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. You're right, since as I like to put it I prefer to administer from the front (i.e., I'm active at AIV, UAA, CAT:RFU and DYK and I mainly create and improve articles) rather than the back I may not be as familiar with the nuances of court, as it were. I go there when I have to, but not for nothing does WP:DRAMA redirect to AN/I. Sometimes I think we could reduce drama and other BS if we limited some people to only a certain amount of involvement there if they aren't directly involved in something (or, X amount of mainspace edits for every Y amount of AN/I edits). Make no mistake, there are some editors who do a good job there, but AN/I/RFC/ArbCom et al is not what Wikipedia's about. It's a sideshow. A necessary sideshow, but a sideshow. Caradon nav box
Hi Duncan. Done it - all the parishes in the Template:Caradon navigation box are now bluelinked. :)
User:Felix Folio Secundus contributed a couple of parishes too - my thanks to him. I'll now work my way through the parishes I didn't contribute adding and correcting coords. OK, mate - what's next? Andy F (talk) 18:07, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- Duncan, I've now completed adding coordinates to all 165 articles originally listed on the WP:Cornwall talkpage. I also added the Cornwall template where it was missing. I will look at the project's 'to do' list and find my next task. Happy Christmas! 11:51, 18 December 2008 (UTC)Andy F (talk)

Do not vandalise the article by removing sourced information. He is also a historian in the subject of Sussex and the earliest source for his location places him in Brighton. What I am saying, is discuss the edit on the talk page, rather than get into a edit war. I am also going to tell this to Sprogeeet. Thanks. Inferno, Lord of Penguins 23:55, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- I messaged sprogeeet on his/her talk page, so he/she should know to stop by now. If they make the edit again, message me. Inferno, Lord of Penguins 00:00, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

FYI
Hello, DuncanHill! Just a head's up regarding the target on the shortcut WP:DRAMA. I changed it back to AN/I because, as I stated in my edit summary, it has already gone through 2 TfD's to keep the target at AN/I (see the talk page). I wanted to touch base with you to avoid any warring. I am not necessarily saying I care one way or the other, but I use that shortcut, so I would prefer another TfD to see if retargeting it is acceptable. Rgrds. --Tombstone (talk) 08:10, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Maps of parishes
Hi Duncan, I noticed this on the WP:Cornwall 'to do' list: Parish maps are needed for Carrick, North Cornwall and Caradon in a similar style to Penwith or Kerrier which should be slotted into the main district infobox
Who did the original Penwith and Kerrier ones? Are there higher-resolutions copies of those? Any clues or suggestions as to where I'd get a starter to do draw the missing maps? Andy F (talk) 12:00, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: Rename. More accurate name, and consistent with other "civil parishes in" categories. The word "in" is preferred in Wikipedia category names. (See also this discussion.) --Carlaude (talk) 20:37, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

On your commenting style
You should probably lay off the use of derision. It isn't productive. --TS 21:25, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- It's at least as productive as your contributions. DuncanHill (talk) 21:28, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
I've no idea what the issue is, but please do not use edit summaries to goad or attack other editors [2].--Scott Mac (Doc) 21:30, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you Scott, can I suggest that you and Tony stay away from me and I'll stay away from you? we appear not to bring out the best in each other. DuncanHill (talk) 21:32, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, no idea what you mean. I try not to personalise things, so you "bring out" no particular behaviour in me at all. Best if everyone sticks to the issues (whatever they are) and refrains from commenting on any personalities, particularly in edit summaries. If I've said something to offend you personally somewhere then I apologise (but I honestly don't remember). Anyway, that's all.--Scott Mac (Doc) 21:44, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you, maybe I should have said Tony doesn't bring out the best in me and I don't want you caught in the cross-fire. DuncanHill (talk) 21:47, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

- I have reverted your edits which either removed cited material, added uncited material, or inserted a POV slant into an article by the use of weasel words. This is an English-language Wikipedia, and it is disruptive (and indeed rude) to post comments which cannot be understood by the very great majority of editors. Please provide a translation. UK coal reserves
Hi DuncanHill, it's been a while (22nd September). I'm sure you remember that you answered a question for me on the Science site and I wrote a paragraph on UK coal reserves on United Kingdom#Economy as a result. A question has been posed on Talk:United Kingdom#UK Coal. Any chance you could have a look at this, 'cause I haven't a clue. Thanks, Daicaregos (talk) 15:32, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
