2015 Wikimedia photo competition
[edit]Probably too late for 2015, but has any thought been put into asking for interior pictures of listed (or other) buildings? Supermarket displays are quite ephemeral and worth recording. Modern kit makes this much more realistic to achieve than before, even without using flash. Most people take the external pic.SovalValtos (talk) 14:13, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello. Thank you for creating Grade I listed buildings in Kensington and Chelsea and Grade II* listed buildings in Kensington and Chelsea. Would you be able to create Grade II listed buildings in Kensington and Chelsea please?Zigzig20s (talk) 10:03, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
- There's only 1,209 of them! Good luck! --Peter I. Vardy (talk) 11:09, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
- You could break them up into several alphabetical lists, as was done for Brighton. I do think it is important to have the list.Zigzig20s (talk) 11:24, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

- @Zigzig20s: It would be easier if I hadn't only done it once or twice a year and half ago and has since completely forgotten how to generate the data, but here you go. -- KTC (talk) 15:43, 14 December 2015 (UTC)
- User:KTC: This document is looking weird. Are you able to create the article please?Zigzig20s (talk) 16:01, 14 December 2015 (UTC)
- @Zigzig20s: It's a comma-separated values file. Open it in any spreadsheet program to see it in tabular form with one listed building per row. I'm afraid not at the moment. Maybe at some indeterminate future I would find some time to do it, but not anytime soon. -- KTC (talk) 21:15, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

Any thoughts?
[edit]Slack Roman fort or Slack Roman Fort? I used the first, I copied Castleshaw but I've found Bewcastle Roman Fort, Hardknott Roman Fort, Lunt Roman Fort, Ilkley Roman Fort and Strutt's Park Roman fort. As the Romans called it something else I thought it should be named like railway stations (Piccadilly railway station). Just wanted a second opinion. I suppose they ought to be named consistently. Forgot to say Hi, hope you are well. :) J3Mrs (talk) 09:42, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
- Ho J3Mrs, I'm keeping well - and keeping busy! Hope you're well too. My inclination with Roman forts would be much like yours: Leave fort lower case. It does end up looking a bit peculiar. I'm not sure if there's really a convention on it. Nev1 (talk) 20:30, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
- Ok my thoughts too. Somebody changed it but that's Wikipedia for you. I only asked as I know you're interested in castles. I have no idea where to look. Thanks anyway. J3Mrs (talk) 22:26, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

If you have time, could you look over the Description section for improvements. Thanks.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 12:13, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Doug, I'll happily take a look. Nev1 (talk) 21:28, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
- @Doug Coldwell: I think that section is very clear. The potential for things to get complicated is the second of those paragraphs, but I think it was handled well. It might be worth explaining in brackets what the Latin terms mean (or perhaps just swapping dominium for 'control'). Nev1 (talk) 22:15, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

List of scheduled monuments in Mendip
[edit]Hi, Your edit to List of scheduled monuments in Mendip removed a picture and references from Tithe Barn Pilton for no reason I could work out so I have reverted. Your edit summary said "(Semi-automated addition of image(s) and/or commonscat link(s) to monument list)" so I wondered if there was a problem with the gadget?— Rod talk 07:43, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
- I'm the creator of the tool Nev1 used to make the edit and can confirm that this is a bug with it. I will work on a fix and hopefully have it out soon. Sorry for the error.--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 09:41, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

A summary of a Featured Article you nominated at WP:FAC will appear on the Main Page soon. I had to squeeze the summary down to around 1200 characters; was there anything I left out you'd like to see put back in? Could you check the article one more time before its day on the Main Page? - Dank (push to talk) 03:57, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Dank, I'll take a look and get back to you. Nev1 (talk) 18:08, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
- Dank, the summary looks good to me, I don't think there's a desperate need to include more. Nev1 (talk) 16:23, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- Okay, great. Will I be seeing more of your castles soon? - Dank (push to talk) 18:36, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- As you might have gathered from how long it's taken me to reply(!) I'm a bit short of time at the moment. I can potter about a bit on castle articles here and there, but sadly the extra time needed for FAC quality may be a bit out of reach for the foreseeable future. That's the consequence of me being foolhardy and thinking I can juggle part-time post-graduate research with full-time work. But never say never, all it takes is the right castle. Hello from the team at Featured article review!
[edit]We are preparing to take a closer look at Featured articles promoted in 2004–2010 that may need a review. We started with a script-compiled list of older FAs that have not had a recent formal review. The next step is to prune the list by removing articles that are still actively maintained, up-to-date, and believed to meet current standards. We know that many of you personally maintain articles that you nominated, so we'd appreciate your help in winnowing the list where appropriate.
Please take a look at the sandbox list, check over the FAs listed by your name, and indicate on the sandbox talk page your assessment of their current status. Likewise, if you have taken on the maintenance of any listed FAs that were originally nominated by a departed editor, please indicate their status. BLPs should be given especially careful consideration.
Thanks for your help! Maralia (talk) 03:22, 30 May 2015 (UTC)

Cadbury Castle, Somerset and missing page numbers
[edit]Hi, I've just started doing some expansion on Cadbury Castle, Somerset and noticed quite a few of the book sources are lacking page numbers. Do you have any of:
- Alcock, Leslie (1972). "By South Cadbury is that Camelot...": Excavations at Cadbury Castle 1966-70. London: Thames and Hudson. ISBN 0-8128-1505-X.
- Alcock, Leslie (1973). Arthur's Britain. Harmondsworth: Pelican. ISBN 978-0140213966.
- Alcock, Leslie (1995). Cadbury Castle, Somerset: The Early Medieval Archaeology. University of Wales Press. ISBN 978-0708312759.
- Tabor, Richard (2008). Cadbury Castle: The hillfort and landscapes. Stroud: The History Press. ISBN 978-0-7524-4715-5.
If so could you look up the relevant page numbers? Obviously any other ideas or edits for improvement would be great as I'd like to take this one to GAN sometime.— Rod talk 15:58, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:MacLellan's Castle 20080422 - entrance.jpg
[edit]A tag has been placed on File:MacLellan's Castle 20080422 - entrance.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Your recent edit on Mustafizur Rahman
[edit]I undone your last edit on Mustafizur Rahman. A part of your copyediting enhanced an error. What I am more concerned about is what made you remove some words. Feel free to neglect my comments. Ikhtiar H (talk) 12:44, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Ikhtiar H. Good work on getting Mustafizur's article to GA status. It's good to see an important player getting some attention. I removed some text because I thought the tone didn't quite fit with an encyclopedic writing style. So in the bit which reads "He was embraced heavily in his outset" it's unclear what embraced heavily means. Does it mean he's a fan favourite or that he is well regarded by his team mates? Nev1 (talk) 12:51, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Nev1: It implies both cases but he mostly dominated the native media. Can you please raise the importance scale on both Bangladesh and cricket wikiprojects? Ikhtiar H (talk) 12:55, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
- I'm happy changing the importance for the cricket project (and have done so), but am not familiar with WikiProject Bangladeh's importance scale so won't change that. Nev1 (talk) 12:59, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

DYK for Newcastle Emlyn Castle
[edit]On 18 April 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Newcastle Emlyn Castle, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that sixty oxen were used to haul the siege engine that helped force Newcastle Emlyn Castle (pictured) to surrender in 1287? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Newcastle Emlyn Castle. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Newcastle Emlyn Castle), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Chepstow photos
[edit]Thanks for uploading recent photos in and around Chepstow. I've removed the one of the Wye bridge, simply because - although more recent - it was taken on a disappointingly grey day and - more importantly - shows the temporary scaffolding that was on the bridge for a few months in 2015/16 for repairs and repainting, but which was removed some time ago. It's not far from me, so I could take a new even more up-to-date photo, on a bright day, and put it up before the bicentenary celebrations later this month. Ghmyrtle (talk) 16:23, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

FAC voluntary mentoring scheme
[edit]During a recent lengthy discussion on the WP:FAC talkpage, several ideas were put forward as to how this procedure could be improved, particularly in making it more user-friendly towards first-time nominees. The promotion rate for first-timers at FAC is depressingly low – around 16 percent – which is a cause for concern. To help remedy this, Mike Christie and I, with the co-operation of the FAC coordinators, have devised a voluntary mentoring scheme, in which newcomers will guided by more experienced editors through the stages of preparation and submission of their articles. The general format of the scheme is explained in more detail on Wikipedia: Mentoring for FAC, which also includes a list of editors who have indicated that they are prepared to act as mentors.
Would you be prepared to take on this role occasionally? If so, please add your name to the list. By doing so you incur no obligation; it will be entirely for you to decide how often and on which articles you want to act in this capacity. We anticipate that the scheme will have a trial run for a few months before we appraise its effectiveness. Your participation will be most welcome. Brianboulton (talk) 21:35, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- Many thanks for signing up. The response from would-be mentors has been most encouraging. Schemes like this are often slow to take off, and it may be a while before we know if it's working. But with this level of support, including that of many of our most experienced FA editors, I think it has every chance. Brianboulton (talk) 16:51, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
- It's a good idea and I hope the mentoring goes well. I think the number of people signing up is important as it shows people want to help. Thanks for the invite, I probably wouldn't have put my name forward otherwise since I was unsure how much time I'll have to mentor. Nev1 (talk) 18:18, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection
[edit]Hello, Nev1. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.
Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.
In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:
- Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
- A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.
Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins
[edit]Hello,
Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers
[edit]Hi Nev1.
A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.
If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/February 19, 2017, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1100 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so. Several user rights changes you made
[edit]Hello Nev1, Last year you overrode extended confirmed autopromote requirements for this batch of editors. Is this still required or can they be reset to normal? — xaosflux Talk 15:32, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Xaosflux, I gave the right to students so they could publish articles using the Content Translation Tool. They're studying MSc translation studies, so no fear of the text not being up to standard! The module resumes this month so I'd like the rights to be left in place a bit longer. Nev1 (talk) 11:45, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks, they probably won't know to avoid arbcom restricted topic pages - but if they are focusing on course related items unlikely to wander in to them. — xaosflux Talk 15:53, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
March Madness 2017
[edit]G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive
[edit]G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
- updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Dear Nev, If you had time, I'd very much value your opinion at the above. I'm looking for advice/guidance on the optimal format to adopt for referencing a couple of lists of Welsh listed buildings, namely Grade I listed buildings in Monmouthshire and Grade II* listed buildings in Monmouthshire. I want to follow best practice and adopt a style that could then be used on other Welsh buildings lists. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Best regards. Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)
[edit]ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.
Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.
We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

[edit]Worcestershire - one of England's oldest and still existing (with some minor boundary changes) ceremonial and political shires, famous for its nearly 1000 year old cathedral, the River Severn, the AONB of the Malvern Hills, some of the oldest schools in the country, England's fastest growing university, apples, pears, cider and cricket, and of course its world famous sauce. The Wikiproject is now in need of some attention. Created 12 years ago, this project amassed a huge resource for editors working on all kinds of articles and categories related in some way or another to the county. Kudpung is more or less retired from Wikipedia getting on for 2 years ago and it would be good if a group of editors could get it up to date and continue to maintain it.

How we will see unregistered users
[edit]Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
