Service awards proposal

[edit]
Master Editor Hello, Rfc1394/2010! I noticed you display a service award, and would like to invite you to join the discussion over a proposed revamping of the awards.

If you have any opinions on the proposal, please participate in the discussion. Thanks! — the Man in Question (in question) 04:03, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:BBC World Service Big Ben 1-1-2009.ogg

[edit]

In December 2009, you uploaded File:BBC World Service Big Ben 1-1-2009.ogg. Two things: First, I have taken a (reduced quality) extract of this for use in an article. The extract is called File:BBC World Service Westminster chimes.ogg. Hope that is OK. Second, somebody has placed a {{Non-free reduce}} template on your original file. It looks like they want the quality reduced to less than 64 kbps. If you like, I can do this for you, but I wanted to ask before doing it. (Please respond here as I am watching this page.) HairyWombat (talk) 01:48, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I have no problem if you think it would be more "acceptable" to use a lower quality version. It was the sort of thing that could be caught only once a year. I didn't really consider the issue of quality, it doesn't matter whether it's high quality or low quality, it's unlikely to affect the possibility of people listening to the BBC. Paul Robinson (Rfc1394) (talk) 02:50, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is not a matter of what I think (I prefer the highest quality), but of what is necessary to avoid your file being deleted by deletionists. What about the extract? Do you object to me taking that? I want it to replace a recording of mine in the article Westminster Quarters. (My recording has been proposed for deletion.) HairyWombat (talk) 03:53, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I can't really see why it would be proposed for deletion. It consists of exactly what it is, the time signal the BBC gave at exactly midnight about 14 months ago. It's not going to interfere with people listening to the BBC World Service, is not likely to be something that they would sell, and has no commercial value anyway. It so clearly falls exactly into the standards of what fair use is that I can't see where there would be an issue about its use. So, anyway, if you want to use all or part of it for another article, or you want to substitute a re-recording of it at a lower bitrate, again I have no problem with either. Paul Robinson (Rfc1394) (talk) 05:51, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Please take a look, and either revert to the original or replace the {{Non-free reduce}} template with {{Non-free reduced|~~~~~}}. If you choose the latter then someone will delete the original version. The bit rate ended up lower than I aimed for, so we could try again for a higher quality. File source problem with File:Syncopated Clock 11K.ogg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Syncopated Clock 11K.ogg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 04:45, 3 February 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Salavat (talk) 04:45, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This has been corrected, and the source has been identified. Paul Robinson (Rfc1394) (talk) 05:46, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:BBC_World_Service_Big_Ben_1-1-2009.ogg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:BBC_World_Service_Big_Ben_1-1-2009.ogg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 21:43, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wasn't sure if you were around (and they only gave two days notice before deletion). I have therefore added {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}} with the reason "The BBC World Service will always be copyright of the BBC. Pray, from where can this free audio sample be found?" Hopefully that will end this sillyness. If you don't like my reason then obviously you are free to change it. HairyWombat (talk)
Later. The file was deleted anyway, so I have appealed the decision here. HairyWombat (talk) 16:13, 16 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Even later. Appeal was successful; file undeleted. Discussion of administator's recent behaviour is taking place here. HairyWombat (talk) 02:58, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

blanked page

Hi Rfc1394, this is a message from an automated bot, regarding . You blanked the page and, since you are its sole author, FrescoBot has interpreted it as a request for deletion of the page and asked administrators to satisfy the requests per speedy deletion criterion G7. Next time you want a page that you've created deleted, you can explicitly request the deletion by inserting the text {{db-author}}. Nomination for deletion of Template:Bbyee

[edit]

Template:Bbyee has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for discussion page. Thank you. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 05:12, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated List of film directors by name, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of film directors by name. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. AussieLegend (talk) 09:39, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I am confused as to why I received this message. I checked; I am neither the creator of this page nor have I touched this page in the last 500 changes, going back more than two years, and I suspect I've never edited this page. (But I would oppose its deletion.) Paul Robinson (Rfc1394) (talk) 14:39, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello Rfc1394! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot notifying you on behalf of the the unreferenced biographies team that 1 of the articles that you created is currently tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 3 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

  1. Eric T. Washington - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL

Hi I notice your edit (ages ago lol) that incoporated media coverage of sex crimes into the article of Rape shield law. However, according to my understanding, rape shield is a technical legal term that refers to the prohibition on introducing the sexual history of a witness into the evidence and the cross examination of a witness regarding his/her sexual history. It does not refer to the legal restriction on media reporting of sex crimes. Would you mind if I create a new page (e.g.Media coverage of sex crimes and move your edit there? Orphaned non-free image File:Two huds.png

[edit]
⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Two huds.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk 03:29, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
