May seem like a really dumb question and maybe I am taking things too literally. - Moved things in order; yes, on this page is fine (or an article's talk page if about the article, but that's more public). When starting new topics, such as this one, please use the 'New section' tab between 'Edit' and 'View history', which will automatically place it at the bottom where it is supposed to go to keep things in order (except special project pages which specify alphabetical or top). - I mistakenly removed the whole userbar and newpage template.........and didn't realize the mistake until I was told my DBigXray a while ago..I was actually trying to remove the Click here to add an image of yourself dialogue as you already had an image..but....removed the whole template... No I don't know what it is but I will check it out. I am enjoying browsing around, but anything that makes this easier is more than welcomed. I am trying to figure out how to make a cool signature like you guys got, and also how to divide pages in two like have columns? I tried the table insert but its not working how I like so onward with education. I am really familiar with and know how to write my own html code for websites (which is helping a lot) so I have been checking out the text in other peoples posts to learn a little something. - Glad to hear you know HTML, This will surely make your life much comfortable here on Wiki :) As my friend Strike has already told you about TWINKLE, I thought of adding my word about it. First of all (although I use it myself) I will "not" recommend you to use it right away (as you are new here). Its better to spend some time here, learn how to handle stuff and the policies of course. After a week or a month (whenever you are comfortable and would not mind experimenting something new), you can start using Twinkle. Its an extremely useful tool, (specially for the Talkbacks ;) ) and whole bunch of other uses. --ÐℬigXЯaɣ 19:15, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Getting back to you...
Hi, Tatooed! Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to your message on my talk page. My laptop charger died and my battery ran down and it took me a few days to have time to drive into the big city to replace it. I just got up and running about an hour ago.
Anyway, you did fine leaving me your message. There are two ways for you to get my reply. I can come here and leave if for you, as I am doing. Or you can "watch" my talk page by clicking on the little star toward the top of the page. There is one at the top of pretty much every Wikipedia page. If it's white it means you are not "watching" that page. If it's blue, then you have added it to your watch list. Do you know how your watch list works? If not, just let me know, I'll be happy to explain it. Some people have a message at the top of their talk page that tells you where they will reply. Most don't -- and they'll usually come to your page to answer, as I am now. But if I'm not sure I always "watch" their page for a while to be certain.
For Teahouse replies, people who use the template with the pretty picture and all -- you can just click on it (I think on the blue words, if I remember right) and it will take you to the right spot. (Any time words are in blue it's a Wikilink and clicking on it should take you to the related page). Computer challenged people like me who haven't figured the template out yet mean you have to do what you did -- go to the page yourself. Once on the page you can look at the Contents box on the right hand side, and if you remember the title of your message you can click on it to save a little scrolling.
Again, I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. Just unfortunate timing. I'm more than happy to be your talk page guinea pig, :), and if I can help in any other way, just let me know. Have fun!Tlqk56 (talk) 03:42, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Oh that would be awesome if you could help me with that. My memory is not so good sometimes and all the help I have gotten in the past few days I want to save until I have saved them to memory before deleting them for good. Archiving would be better. means 72 hours, so any thread that remains un answered for more than 72 hours will be moved to archive you can also change it to 240 if you only want to archive stuff that are 10 days (240 hrs) old. Adding a photo
Are you trying to add a photo to a page? I don't mean to butt in, however, if you are having trouble, I have a handy template I use: [File:file name goes here.jpg|thumb|200px|alt=Description for those who can't see or can't get pictures.|Caption here] Just put it between two brackets instead of one as I did. This will post to the right hand side of the page. Insert the word left between the pipes after thumb |left| to make it go on the left. Play around with the size if you want. I copied this from someone else's page, but there's a good explanation here, too: Wikipedia:Picture tutorial. Please excuse this if you don't need it. Yes I was trying to add a photo.. I did the upload but then couldn't figure out how to add it. I figure when I try to write an article one day I will need to know how to do that. Adding reference on wiki articles
Hello Tattoodwaitress! Please do not forget to add references for the content you add to Wikipedia. Adding a well formatted references is very easy to do.
- While editing any article or a wikipage, on the top of the edit window you will see a toolbar which says "cite" click on it
- Then click on "templates",
- Choose the most appropriate template and fill as many details as you can,
This will add a well formatted reference that would be helpful in case the website link (web URL) becomes inactive (dead/link rot) after some time. thanks and regards --ÐℬigXЯaɣ 15:05, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

"Adopted" an article

I have "adopted" an article to clean up and edit. . i guess it will be my pet project. I am really really new to Wiki and researched this case after watching a documentary on TV about Colleen Stan, and found my way to the wiki article. It's actually the reason I finally did it, started editing. YAY! I hope to add as many ref's and cite's to it as I can, along with some additional verifiable information. Maybe when I feel adequate enough at editing and writing here I can get a page going for Colleen (in response to an earlier post on the talk page of the same article). I changed a couple things today but still don't feel real confident that I am doing it right. Especially filling out the cite template and understanding the difference between the different types of references, I have read the helps and referred to them while editing but I am a hands on kind of girl. Anyone who gets a chance to look at my edits please please feel free to comment on them so that I may be able to learn and get better at this. Thanks a bunch. - Hi Tattoodwaitress. Nice to meet you (digitally so to speak:-) You're doing fine. I do have a couple of minor notes and one more substantive. First, ref tags get snugged up right against what you are referencing—so it's:
Text<ref>citation</ref>
, notText <ref>citation</ref>
The second minor issue is that the citation always go outside of any punctuation, such as a period or comma. So it's:Text.<ref>citation</ref>
notText<ref>citation</ref>.
More importantly, we strive to only cite reliable sources and blog posts and things of that nature are not useful. In addition to the last link, please see WP:SELFPUBLISH. I am mentioning this because because some of the sources you've used, such as the Wordpress article, are self-published material. If you're not familiar with it, Googlae provides a book search and a news archive search; I would go there first, do not pass go, before ever trying to do a web search. See this search and this search. Lastly, if you want to fix something glaring about the article, check out our guideline on lead sections of articles. The lead section is supposed to be a summary of the body, hitting on the major points of the article. The article would definitely be improved if you wrote one. Web searches
Notes to self. Saving information someone else gave to me: Hello again, re: those links for searches that you shared with me, specifically the sac bee ones, when you go to them they are not complete articles because you have to purchase them to see the full article. Are you telling me that its okay to link to information like those as long as you are pointing to them for the information they are showing and not assuming anything about the remainder of the article? And as far as the books go, most books you find might show a few pages but not the entire book. Do editors here use that kind of references too?
- When I am researching a subject that has lots of sources available, I usually only look at the news articles and books that provide "full view", at least at first. But I think you may be under the misimpression that everything you cite is required to be online, which is why you're balking at using information provided in an article or book where you can't read the whole thing and provide a link to the whole thing. If I have a book in my hand that's not available at all online, it is perfectly fine to cite that source—many of the most reliable sources in fact are not online. Please see WP:SOURCEACCESS. You might also mosey over to WP:Featured articles and look at a bunch, not only because its' educational to see what we consider our best work, and many are wonderful, but because numerous ones are based on a mix of sources available and unavailable online but some are made up entirely of citations to books and the like that are offline only. So, if I can see half of a newspaper article or page from a book (i.e., Google Books' and News Archive' "snippet view") and it has information I want to cite, I sure can use it and cite to that source because I've seen it, even if not the whole thing. But again, It's just easier to first look at all the full view search results first. Now, say you come across an article that appears really useful from what little you see, but you want to see the rest. You can go over to WP:RX and request someone who has free access to provide you a copy of the article (obviously, this doesn't work so well for books). I searched for help with the citation needed tag
I only found one ref to help with the removal of the citation needed tag and only found one link that really did not fit what my question is. I edited this article by adding a citation however not sure if I should have deleted the citation needed tag or not. There is lots of help on how to create a ref or citation but not when or if one should be deleted. Please advise Tattoodwaitress (talk) 02:47, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
- I have seen your edit on the above article, looks fine. If you have found citation for the said incident, that verifies the claims that are preceded by the [citation needed] tags, then its correct to remove the citation tags. For example if the statement says "A, B leading to C[citation needed]" and you get a citation for A and C but not for B then its good to move the Cn tags close to B so that it reads "A, B[citation needed] leading to C[1]" so that someone can check for B and if unable to find can remove B as its unverified.
- ^ The reference for the content
- When in doubt use common sense :) and of course you can always ask quuestions dont forget to use the {{helpme}} to get quick assistance if needed.

- you may also take a peek at WP:NOCITE to read the policy to handle [citation needed] tags.

- Yes it wont work here. In fact is for all the pages on wikipedia, if you have a link that points to the same page then that link will be disabled. so the link to your talk page will be disabled on your talk page but it works well on my talk page,--DℬigXray 19:59, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

- They are used sometimes used synonymously but being pedantic, a citation is the mechanism for providing attribution, while "reference" (or "source") is the thing being cited. So a citation would be: <ref>The New York Times</ref> and the reference or source is The New York Times, that's being cited.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 07:23, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

- Twasn't me but I'll take the thanks. The first few months here, especially for someone who is interested, can be mind blowing because there is really so much to know (and do), and Wikipedia is truly vast. But after you study and memorize each of the guidelines in the template next door (a pop quiz will be given), you can study Help:edit summary and WP:DIFF to learn how to find out who placed what (see also Wikipedia:WikiBlame). Short Wiki Tutorial
Hi TW, I am glad to see your user page and talk page have improved a lot. I am not sure if you have seen this or not, but WP:Tutorial is a nice and short tutorial to understand editing on wiki. Please give it a look as it will surely help you. APart from this i have added a sidebar {{guideline list}}, which enumerates a the guidelines to be aware of, you can read them one by one whenever you have time. I had to place the template a little above so that it does not leave empty space below it. as fogetaboutit has already mentioned, edit summary and View history is a good way to find out difference. Lending a hand
(Whoops, I answered here. Sorry, I'm not always good at following directions. LOL) I'd love to lend a hand. At some point I'll need somebody to look at some of the things I'm working on, too. Maybe we can help each other out, as time allows. :) I had to smile when you asked if I jump around when I'm working on articles. I sure do -- right now I'm trying to gather info for one, but I have three open and I keep adding a bit here and a piece there. And sometimes I sit down and say "I'm going to do... and end up doing everything but that. I suspect you'll find your own style, I think I'm just beginning to after about three months.
As for getting the name changed, I've heard that's really hard, but with a consensus of some sort you can make a redirect. Sarah talked a bit about that here: Teahouse question. I've done redirects, but only for obvious things like leaving out someone's middle name. The page titles didn't change.
Looking at the history, nobody's done anything with it since 2008, so I doubt anyone will object to your changes, but it's always good to leave a message on the Talk page. So, where would you like to start? Do you think you'll be adding a lot of info, and reorganizing it? Or is it more a matter of adding things here and there? I asked because I've learned not to spend a lot of time tweaking an article I ended up re-writing totally.
Here's what I do on a big project. I start a "notebook" off Wikipedia, on my computer. (I use Microsoft Onenote.) I have pages where I just save every http: reference I find with a note about what I might use. I pile my books and papers around me, and start dividing the info I find into categories. I keep at that until I think I've got most of my info found and in the right section. Then I start writing one section at a time. But it rarely works that neatly, as I said before. LOL
Maybe if you decide where you think you want to start we can get a plan and divide the work. Clearly you have the expertise, but I'm a writer and can do some copy editing and organizing, etc. What ever you need. Sorry this turned out to be so long. I'll be glad to help any way I can! - LOL... I tend to think we must be a lot alike cuz when I was done writing to you I thought to myself Geeze girl you took a lot of words to say just about nothin'.. Haa... There is so much information on the subject, and working in the drug and alcohol field myself I know right off hand the article touches on just a tiny bit of it. - New editors who participated in the Teahouse edit 10x the number of articles, make 7x more global edits, and 2x as much of their content survives on Wikipedia compared to the control group.
- Women participate in the Teahouse 28% of Teahouse participants were women, up from 9% of editors on Wikipedia in general, good news for this project which aimed to have impact on the gender gap too - but still lots to be done here!
- New opportunities await for the Teahouse in phase two as the Teahouse team and Wikipedia community examine ways to improve, scale, and sustain the project. Opportunities for future work include:

I would like to add a header exclusion on this page for the cluebot. I do not want to archive anything on the left side of this page but I am not understanding how to add the exclusion. RE: the cite tab and the the "template" for web, while in edit mode for an article. Filling out the form. There are options one of them being "work" what does that mean? I have tried searching for the info myself and haven't had luck finding EXACTLY what that means. It shows examples but I am guessing work is kinda like the title. Hi! My daughter and I were out today, (she's a nurse, BTW), and we talked a bit about WP. She confessed that she hates looking something up on WP and finding it goes on for "pages and pages" when all she wanted was an overview, and I said I hate it when the lead is so long I can't see the Table of Contents on the opening screen, because it means this article will be really long. We both agreed we'd rather see a shorter article that sends us to other articles for more details. Of course, that's just us. But I throw it out to you to consider or ignore -- perhaps you might want to consider how to make one introductory article and spin others off of it. - Yes, I did miss the smiley. :( I just looked at the opening simpleWP page, and as a teacher, the instructions on how to write for it all scream "simplified readability" to me -- and there's nothing wrong with that. It's wrong to assume the whole English reading world is at the same level of readability, I think it sounds like a good project, I might even mosey over there some day and try my hand at converting some articles. For TW I was just more concerned that the project gets so big it overwhelms her and she never starts. The purpose isn't to create the perfect article, but to make it better than it is now, which I'm sure she can do. Then she can keep adding to it if she wants. It is bugging me that my archive box is in a weird spot and I do not know how to center my user boxes. Is there a way to do this? Also is there a place that I may find instruction on how to do all these kinds of things? AND one more question. . . if I want to add a smile without that big box and lots of words that ends up in between what I am writing is that possible as well? - I have centered your userboxes by surrounding the code that places them with center tags: <center>something</center> I can't help with the archive box because it looks fine to me so I don't know where you might want it or what fix you'd like. Most templates and things have documentation on their talk pages. So whenever you see something that's produced by a template, go into edit mode and you see some text surrounded by curly braces i.e., {{foo}} That's a template and so its name will always be Template:Name (for the example, Template:Foo). So you can now go look at the template itself, which should have documentation on how to use it and various things you can do to play with placement, parameters and the like. For the smile, the way I found it was simply to click edit this pages, see the code (in this case [[User:Cowman109/Smile3]]—a template actually though rarely one not in curly braces, because it's in the userspace) then navigate to it (by copying User:Cowman109/Smile3 and pasting that into the search field), clicked edit once there and saw what image was being used inside to produce the image of the smile. You can learn about various ways to tweak userboxes at WP:USERBOXES. But it's more difficult to tell you of a "place that I may find instruction on how to do all these kinds of things" because there's all kinds of things involved; templates, tables, html, wikimarkup, magic words, etc. I'd start with help:Template, and help:table. - Thank you for the help. I love those smileys you did and that's exactly what I was looking for. I understand about you not being able to tell me about a specific place to find helps and how to's because there is a lot of information here spread about. I just find it difficult to search if I don't know exactly what to type in the search box I guess. Lots of times I run across the answer that there is no page available by that name and then I find the answer in an unsuspecting place. My archive box (if you look at it now) is to the right but it is partially behind the other stuff on the page. I even, just now, created sections thinking that might help but it appears to be stuck there. I guess I just don't like it hanging out to the right and would rather have it in the center or have the top portion of the page split in two so that I could put something beside it. No big deal really, however it would be nice to know how to put things side by side, if possible, without necessarily having to use the table because I am new at using that too. - Take a look at Wikipedia:Archive#Navigation_templates to look on various types of archive boxes. The one that is right now on your talk page is the default archive box for Cluebot III. It is made in a way so that it aligns itself beside the contents of the talk page. or u can collapse the archive box, if it hurts your eyes :). take a look on my talk page, to see how i have collapsed the archive box so that it is visible only when i click show--DBigXray 09:36, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

- I have found that I like the archive box collapsible with the width that you can make smaller (the example width is 10em). Now I just need to know how to add it to my talk page. What happens to the already archived items for my page if I change it? I don't want those things to disappear on me. I have left the code on my sandbox page for someone to help me with. I am pretty sure it needs something more for it to work right when being added to my talk page. - I have found that I like the archive box collapsible with the width that you can make smaller (the example width is 10em). Now I just need to know how to add it to my talk page. What happens to the already archived items for my page if I change it? I don't want those things to disappear on me. I have left the code on my sandbox page for someone to help me with. I am pretty sure it needs something more for it to work right when being added to my talk page. - Thank you for the help. I love those smileys you did and that's exactly what I was looking for. I understand about you not being able to tell me about a specific place to find helps and how to's because there is a lot of information here spread about. I just find it difficult to search if I don't know exactly what to type in the search box I guess. Lots of times I run across the answer that there is no page available by that name and then I find the answer in an unsuspecting place. My archive box (if you look at it now) is to the right but it is partially behind the other stuff on the page. I even, just now, created sections thinking that might help but it appears to be stuck there. I guess I just don't like it hanging out to the right and would rather have it in the center or have the top portion of the page split in two so that I could put something beside it. No big deal really, however it would be nice to know how to put things side by side, if possible, without necessarily having to use the table because I am new at using that too. - I have centered your userboxes by surrounding the code that places them with center tags: <center>something</center> I can't help with the archive box because it looks fine to me so I don't know where you might want it or what fix you'd like. Most templates and things have documentation on their talk pages. So whenever you see something that's produced by a template, go into edit mode and you see some text surrounded by curly braces i.e., {{foo}} That's a template and so its name will always be Template:Name (for the example, Template:Foo). So you can now go look at the template itself, which should have documentation on how to use it and various things you can do to play with placement, parameters and the like. For the smile, the way I found it was simply to click edit this pages, see the code (in this case [[User:Cowman109/Smile3]]—a template actually though rarely one not in curly braces, because it's in the userspace) then navigate to it (by copying User:Cowman109/Smile3 and pasting that into the search field), clicked edit once there and saw what image was being used inside to produce the image of the smile. You can learn about various ways to tweak userboxes at WP:USERBOXES. But it's more difficult to tell you of a "place that I may find instruction on how to do all these kinds of things" because there's all kinds of things involved; templates, tables, html, wikimarkup, magic words, etc. I'd start with help:Template, and help:table. Sorry I missed youAs you may have guessed, I've been off line, for several reasons. But I'm back. I'm sorry I missed your question about the lead, but glad you found some help. Most places recommend waiting to write the lead till the article is finished, but I confess I usually do some work on it at the beginning, because I find it more motivating to work on an article with a decent lead. (Kind of like putting on lipstick in the morning -- not much of an effort but it makes me feel more positive over all.) I just know I'll have to rewrite it to accurately reflect how the article ended up when I'm finished. And, because I never seem to totally finish, I keep rewriting it later.LOL Anyway, I should be more regular online now, so please let me know how it's going and if I can help. Teahouse guests and hosts are sharing their stories in a new blog post about the project. 1 year statistics for Teahouse visitors compared to invited non-visitors from the pilot:
Over the past year almost 2000 questions have been asked and answered, 669 editors have introduced themselves, 1670 guests have been served, 867 experienced Wikipedians have participated in the project, and 137 have served as hosts. Read more project analysis in our CSCW 2013 paper Last month January was our most active month so far! 78 profiles were created, 46 active hosts answered 263 questions, and 11 new hosts joined the project.
